“We can be that sort of trusted neutral third party to try and tell them what the state of the industry is, and to help create capacity in the community so they can negotiate, discuss, communicate, with some of these wind developers,” said Bryson Robertson, director of Oregon State’s Pacific Marine Energy Center, one of the three university research centers participating.
“We’re sort of stuck between two paradigms,” Christopher Dunn told the group. Projected behind him were two images. On the left, a painting from 1905 depicts a member of the Blackfeet Tribe crouched on a prairie, setting fire to the grass with a flaming torch. On the right, a staged photo from 1955 shows a fire brigade of jeeps and a helicopter heading toward a smoking fire in the distance. “We need both of these,” said Dunn, a forestry researcher at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
That Oregon State University (OSU) led study was developed with US$3m funding from the US Department of Energy to develop a high-energy density battery that is more sustainable and less demanding of rare earth metals.
The Oregon State University Center for Family Enterprise recently honored West Linn’s Willamette Ale & Cider House and 7Bev Corporation with the 2024 Family Harmony Award as part of its annual Excellence in Family Business Award. OSU announced the award May 7.

OSU Land Use Code amendment meetings: OSU Land Use Planning will host a community meeting to discuss proposed amendments to the Corvallis Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan that impact the Corvallis campus. NEW! OSU ID Card update – action needed by June 30: The OSU Key Shop and the ID Center are collaborating on a project to update the building access control system and ensure that all students, faculty and staff obtain an Orange ID card. An Orange ID has a bright orange border on the front of the card and says “Orange Card” on the bottom edge. This project will impact users who received their current cards BEFORE July 2019 and did not obtain an Orange ID. If you received your current ID card after this date, no action is needed. Civic Campus Project: The City of Corvallis is exploring improvements to the Civic Campus, which includes City Hall and the Municipal Court. These buildings are located along the historic Madison Avenue corridor, which connects downtown Corvallis with OSU's campus to the west. Improvements are intended to address safety, resiliency, accessibility and energy efficiency. Professional development award: Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2024 University Mentoring and Professional Development Award. This award, presented annually at University Day, recognizes any classified, professional faculty or faculty member who excels in mentoring, supporting and encouraging OSU employees, especially women and those from under-represented groups or non-traditional careers, and making available to them opportunities for professional, educational and personal development. Fulbright Outreach Lecturing Fund: Bring a current Fulbright Visiting Scholar from another university in the U.S. to OSU: A typical OLF visit is two to five days long, with the scholar completing guest lectures, cultural events and other similar engagements on and off campus. All expenses are covered by Fulbright with no financial commitment required from OSU. Applications accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. NEW! Western Boulevard: Northwest Natural Gas will be performing utilities work at the intersection of SW 35th Street and SW Western Boulevard on Wednesday, May 29. The traffic signal at the intersection will be shut down from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place will be closed May 29-June 10. The closure is necessary to allow for crane activity related to the project. Unlike recent, intermittent closures related to the project, this will be a continuous closure of Campus Way. The Kelley Engineering Center south entrance will also be closed. The north sidewalk and both bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed during this time period.
