In the world of organic farming, the job of creating those new varieties falls to a plant breeder: someone who, often painstakingly, crosses plants until they create a new variety. Dr. Jim Myers (Oregon State University), one of the most accomplished plant breeders in the country, has lots of experience with this.
Patients battling addiction may struggle to fill their prescription for an opioid use disorder at their local pharmacy if they live in a low-income neighborhood or minority community, according to a new national study led by an Oregon State University researcher. It remains to be seen whether this year’s FAFSA fiasco will have an effect on enrollment at Oregon’s higher education institutions. At Oregon State University, initial enrollment figures for incoming freshmen have caught up to last year. But the school won’t have final numbers until October.

When Flores and her colleague pitched the idea of a Mariachi STEAM summer camp for youth, Intel agreed to help fund it. The Washington County 4-H club is a founding partner of the weeklong, overnight camp, which costs students no more than $40 dollars for the week. Flores said the real cost is around $800 per camper.
A new project from Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center aims to help people understand their climate change related emotions, along with ways to work through them. Maud Powell is an associate professor at Oregon State University. She, along with her colleagues, launched the Climate Stress and Grief: Building Resilience in Farmers and Ranchers project last year and joins us to share more.

While students earn their degree in Tourism Recreation and Adventure Leadership at Oregon State University, they will take classes on outdoor living skills, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, mountain expeditions, and Wilderness First Responder. The state has made progress in funding more spots. The most recent report from the Oregon Child Care Research Partnership at Oregon State University found that in December of 2022, the state was subsidizing more than 71,000 daycare and preschool slots, up about 5% from early 2020.
Next month, Oregon State University Extension Service — along with other agencies — will offer Small Farm School, an event at Clackamas Community College that includes workshops and classes on farming in Oregon. Hayley White, a small farms coordinator for Marion and Polk counties, will tell us more about how the extension service is supporting producers and what the industry looks like right now.

Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities. To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing and/or mobility disability(s), and be at least 18 years old. Robot Motion Study: The Oregon State University Department of Mechanical Engineering is conducting an interactive research study to explore how people create expressive motion for robots. Weatherford: Construction activity related to the Weatherford A-wing Remodel project will occasionally impact areas outside the building through Aug. 30. Expected impacts include intermittent closure of the walkway on the west side of Weatherford Hall and partial closure of the bike parking area on the south side of SW Intramural Lane, across the street from Weatherford. These closures are needed for demo waste removal and materials staging.
