OSU researchers map the deep underbelly of the USA (KLCC)

Researchers at Oregon State University are celebrating the completion of an epic mapping project. For the first time, there is a 3-D map of the Earth’s crust and mantle beneath the entire United States. The map could help the utility industry protect the power grid and prevent wide-scale blackouts.
 

Paint it black? OSU scientists study impact of painting wind turbine blade black, to curb bird collisions (KTVZ)

The scat they collect on these surveys will be sent to Dr. Taal Levi’s lab at Oregon State University. This summer, they plan to start using scat to show how the martens are related to each other genetically—something that’s never been done before.
 

A million-and-a-half cyclists, 67 turnouts, ten years: How Mt. Diablo embraced safety and made history (Mercury News)

In April, researchers at the Oregon State University published a 141-page research paper about Mount Diablo Cyclists’ grassroots advocacy-turned-engineering campaign. Partnering with the Department of Transportation, OSU academics worked with Kalin and other local bicyclists to investigate whether bike turnouts would be a viable solution on Oregon’s roads.

Oregon State University Press published the new edition in March under the title “From Thorns to Blossoms: A Japanese American Family in War and Peace.” Its cover features an original painting by Portland artist Julie Asparro that includes Mount Hood, which Loftus saw every day out the kitchen window as she was growing up.

Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Water. Humans are made up of 65% water and need water after three days or we will perish. Water flows through the blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells and flushing wastes out of our bodies. Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities. To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing and/or mobility disability(s), and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must commit 60 minutes to the research and will either wear a VR headset or a light-weight wearable device. Robot Motion Study: The Oregon State University Department of Mechanical Engineering is conducting an interactive research study to explore how people create expressive motion for robots. The study will involve engaging in a simple activity to understand motion concepts and manipulating a robot arm in a variety of styles. The principal investigator is Naomi Fitter. Revised University Policy: The university community is invited to review and provide comment on revised University Standard 07-310 Weapons, Dangerous Chemicals and Destructive Devices. Proposed University Standard 07-310 updates an existing policy that prohibits weapons on university-owned or -controlled property, with certain exceptions. This University Standard is necessary to maintain a community conducive to learning and advances the educational objectives and mission of Oregon State University. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Jefferson Way: As part of the Valley Library Telecommunication Tower project, SW Jefferson Way will be closed between SW Benton Place and SW Waldo Place Aug. 27 to allow for crane activity. The north sidewalk in this section of Jefferson Way will be closed. The south sidewalk will remain open. Westbound traffic on Jefferson Way will be detoured around the area via Benton Place south to Langton Place. 

SW Memorial Place closed to traffic, including west sidewalk: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Memorial Place will be closed to vehicle and cycle traffic Aug. 1-Sept. 12. In addition, the west sidewalk of Memorial Place will closed to pedestrian traffic as well. (view map)  

Weatherford: Construction activity related to the Weatherford A-wing Remodel project will occasionally impact areas outside the building through Aug. 30. Expected impacts include intermittent closure of the walkway on the west side of Weatherford Hall and partial closure of the bike parking area on the south side of SW Intramural Lane, across the street from Weatherford. These closures are needed for demo waste removal and materials staging.
