Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. For more about this section, see: https://today.oregonstate.edu/email/submission-guidelines.
Julie Alexander, senior researcher at Oregon State University, said even without climate change, dam installations still alter the flow regime of rivers, which then changes the water’s temperatures since reservoirs act as thermal units that get warm in the summer. (see also SF Gate)
According to the school’s research, Oregon State is the only R1-rated public university, of 108 schools, that has shown continuous year-to-year growth from 1996 to 2023. By contrast, University of Oregon’s enrollment declined 13 times during that period. (For a PDF version of this story, email osutoday@oregonstate.edu.)
“So a little bit in and a tiny bit south,” Hales said, peering at the sonar screen. “We should be right on top of where the cable comes through the sea floor.” Hales is a professor at Oregon State University and chief scientist for PacWave, the world’s newest testing site for wave energy devices. Laws that allow cyclists to yield at a stop sign, rather than come to a complete stop, don’t increase the likelihood of unsafe driving or cycling behaviors, researchers at Oregon State University have found. (see also KTVZ, Central Oregon Daily)
There isn’t a simple, one-size-fits-all answer for how wildfires impact drinking water. “It really depends on where the fires occur and the characteristics of those watersheds,” Oregon State University forest hydrology professor Kevin Bladon said.
Vivian Irving found it hard to adjust to her first year of college. Like most students who graduated high school in 2021, she had attended part of it online. Unlike a lot of them, Irving really liked the format, finding she could focus better when her academic and social lives were separate. At Oregon State University, she had to reacclimate to learning in person — and do so in lecture halls that, in some cases, held more students than had been in her high-school graduating class. Her classes felt impersonal, and she was having a hard time finding her way socially on campus. (For a PDF version, email osutoday@oregonstate.edu.)
Will Price, an extension agent with OSU in Baker City, said he is compiling a list of potential donors. There have been only a few requests for hay or pasture so far, but Price said that's not surprising with ranchers still taking stock of how the fires have affected them.
“Historically they were called salmon sharks because they were seen at the river mouths up in Alaska eating salmon," Alexandra McInturf, a researcher with Oregon State University, said.
The grassy area where commencement was held at Oregon State University-Cascades in June is a circle of calm in a turbulent sea of construction. (see also KTVZ)
Gov. Tina Kotek has selected new members to the Oregon State University Board of Trustees from a pool of volunteer leaders put forward by the OSU Board of Trustees after consultation with President Jayathi Murthy and the OSU Faculty Senate.
Researchers at Oregon State University have completed a mammoth project to create a 3-D map of electromagnetic energy in the Earth's crust across the continental U.S. What began as an effort to better understand the planet may also have important lessons for energy infrastructure.
Among the wild flowers: Roni Sue, intake assessment associate with Equal Opportunity and Access, says, “This was a wildflower meadow on a hike up Iron Mountain and around Cone Peak in June.”
PacWave: Burke Hales, professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and chief scientist for PacWave, speaks to reporters during a media tour by boat of the construction of PacWave South, Oregon State’s wave energy testing facility.
