Have you ever wondered about the quality of sleep of those who feel perpetually isolated or disconnected? A recent study shows that loneliness might cause sleepless nights filled with nightmares. The researcher behind this fascinating study is Dr. Colin Hesse, a prominent figure at Oregon State University (OSU).

Cheatgrass and other invasive species are threatening important rangelands and helping fuel severe wildfires in Eastern Oregon. Lisa Ellsworth is an associate professor and range ecologist at the college of agricultural sciences at Oregon State University. She joins us to explain how these areas have been affected by invasive species, extreme wildfires and human activity and what that means for the future of a crucial Western ecosystem.

How to keep rats out of homes and gardens (Oregonian)

“There are definite social norms that say if you have rodents living near you it’s associated with dirtiness, garbage and waste products,” said Dana Sanchez, wildlife specialist for Oregon State University Extension Service. “There’s a reticence to admitting to seeing rats or talking about them because there’s a fear of public shaming. That works to the rats’ advantage because people aren’t finding cooperative solutions to a collective problem.”

Expanded Opportunity: Oregon Sea Grant Natural Resource Policy Fellowship. The Oregon Sea Grant Natural Resource Policy Fellowship has expanded its eligibility to include both graduate and undergraduate students with relevant coursework or equivalent experience (see our webpage for more details on eligibility). Meditation Research Study: The OSU Edwards Social Cognition Lab in the School of Psychological Science is looking for volunteers to take a self-guided, online meditation course for eight weeks and complete some research tasks for a study. Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities. To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing and/or mobility disability(s), and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must commit 60 minutes to the research and will either wear a VR headset or a light-weight wearable device. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Monroe Ave: As part of the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, traffic will be restricted to a single lane on NW Monroe Avenue at NW 25th Street to allow for intersection work. This closure will be in effect from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Aug. 12-23. The north-south crosswalk at Monroe Avenue and 25th Street will be closed. Several city parking spaces to the east and west of the intersection, on the north side of Monroe Avenue, will be closed.

UPDATED! SW 26th Street closed between Orchard Avenue & Monroe Avenue: As part of the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, SW 26th Street will be closed to vehicle traffic between NW Orchard Avenue and NW Monroe Avenue through Aug. 22. The east sidewalk on 26th Street will be closed. The west sidewalk will remain open. The Johnson Hall loading dock will also remain open.

SW Memorial Place closed to traffic, including west sidewalk: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Memorial Place will be closed to vehicle and cycle traffic Aug. 1- Sept. 12. In addition, the west sidewalk of Memorial Place will closed to pedestrian traffic as well. (view map)  

Weatherford: Construction activity related to the Weatherford A-wing Remodel project will occasionally impact areas outside the building through Aug. 30. Expected impacts include intermittent closure of the walkway on the west side of Weatherford Hall and partial closure of the bike parking area on the south side of SW Intramural Lane, across the street from Weatherford. These closures are needed for demo waste removal and materials staging.
