Clemens “Clem” Starck, an award-winning poet and longtime Oregon State University maintenance worker and contractor, whose poems often focused on work and manual labor, died on Thursday, March 21, in Dallas, Oregon. He was 86.
On a cold, misty morning in the fall of 2023, I met up with Chris Still near Oregon State University’s campus in Corvallis, Oregon, before heading to an experimental forest in the nearby Cascade Mountains. A professor at the university’s College of Forestry, Still is a tall, soft-spoken man in his fifties with graying hair and a beard.

“I don’t think lunar gardening is harmful, but it may not have the benefits that gardeners think it does,” says Brooke Edmunds, an Extension horticulturist at Oregon State University.
“This is a case that poses a genuine ethical dilemma,” said Michael Paul Nelson, a professor of environmental ethics and philosophy at Oregon State University. “You’re either going to kill a bunch of individual living beings, or you’re going to let a species disappear. No matter what, harm is done.”

“Wings” by Holly Andres: Holly Andres is a photographer and director known for her stylized cinematic scenarios. Her work has appeared in galleries and museums from Barcelona, Istanbul and Bogota, to New York, San Francisco and Atlanta with viewers drawn to her often dark and mysterious or bright and witty imagery. Andres’ photos will be on display in in Fairbanks Hall from April 8-May 19.

Registration open for Oregon Educators’ Summit: The College of Education, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Education, has announced that registration for the Equitable Accelerated Learning K-8 (ALK-8) statewide summit is now open to all Oregon public school educators. The summit will be held Aug. 6-7 on the Corvallis campus. The two-day event will feature ALK-8 working groups and professional learning for all Oregon educators. Participants will learn about innovative, field-initiated and piloted classroom-based resources and professional development materials reflecting the knowledge and expertise of Oregon literacy and mathematics leaders. Affordable Learning Grant: The Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until April 24. Faculty can receive up to $15,000 in funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource (OER) for your course. OER are openly licensed course materials that save students money and make higher education more accessible.
