On this edition of Oregon on the Record, you’ll hear from Chris Johns, an Oregonian who became the Editor-In-Chief of National Geographic Magazine and, along the way, inspired his daughter to become a photojournalist. Dog training helps kids with disabilities (My Central Oregon)

By engaging regularly with their family dog and teaching it a series of tricks and commands, children with developmental disabilities experienced a significant increase in their daily physical activity, a new study from Oregon State University researchers found.

Unraveling the mystery of whale song (Goodnet)

Dr Kate Stafford from Oregon’s State University also praised the research calling it “groundbreaking.” She said, “The production and reception of sound is the most important sense for marine mammals, so any studies that elucidate how they make sounds has the potential to move the field forward.”

Yellowstone research reignites debate over wolf-generated trophic cascade (Gazette-Times)

Robert Beschta, professor emeritus of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University, along with fellow researcher William Ripple, were some of the first scientists to advocate in research published in 2010, for the “top-down” effect of wolf reintroduction positively affecting willow and aspen growth.

Not a baaaad job (Oregon Wine Press)

Plenty of research, including some from Oregon State University, supports the practice of grazing ground cover in the vineyard. Studies show soil diversity created by grazing increases the quality of wine by improving a plant’s ability to use nutrients. Grazing increases phenols and pigments– the stuff of delicious wine. Other regenerative practices also accompany grazing. Björnson has never tilled the vineyard, and doesn’t irrigate, saying he aims to farm sustainably.
