This year it's a slow crawl to financial aid packages for students (NPR)

Prospective college students are one step closer to financial aid packages this week, but the timeline is still months behind. This "is definitely one of the stranger years that we've had," says Keith Raab, director of financial aid at Oregon State University.
 

In hot water: An OSU study shows marine heatwaves are hurting oceans (KLCC)

On this edition of Oregon on the Record, you’ll hear from a scientist, Dylan Gomes, who authored a study while at Oregon State University which shows that due to heat waves the Pacific Ocean food web is being disrupted. Due to warmer temperatures, new organisms have moved in and crowded out key species at the bottom of the food web. (see also KGW)

OSU scientists discover metal that can pull CO2 from air (Missoula Current)

Oregon State University scientists studying ways to filter greenhouse gases from the air recently discovered that when molecules of the metal vanadium are bound with oxygen molecules as peroxide, they can pull carbon dioxide from the air. The carbon molecules can be siphoned off using a small amount of energy that’s then funneled into other uses, like making limestone for buildings or enhancing the atmospheric carbon in greenhouses, accelerating plant growth.
 

Oregon State University receives federal funding to boost Oregon's wildfire smoke resiliency (KEZI)

U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) announced on Thursday that Oregon State University has received federal funding to develop means of reducing wildfire smoke exposures and increase community resilience statewide for wildfire smoke, state officials said.
 

4-H robotics teams in rural Wasco County qualify for world competition (OSU Extension)

If they can raise enough funds, all three 4-H teams will head to Dallas in May to represent Wasco County in the Global VEX Robotics Championships.

PRAx opens its doors on April 6: Don’t miss your chance to attend an all-day Open House from noon to 7 p.m. on April 6 at the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts. A Conversation with Alexander Lloyd Blake: Alexander Lloyd Blake, founder and artistic director of Tonality Choir, appears at 7 p.m., April 12 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality is an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace and social justice. During this event, Blake will join historian and ethnomusicologist Kelly Bosworth on stage for a conversation about using music as a conduit for environmental awareness and change and social change more broadly. Bosworth is an assistant professor of public history and popular music at Oregon State University. General admission is free.

Hatfield Marine Science Day: Hatfield Marine Science Day is an annual science fair and open house featuring the marine science programs and research at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. You can talk with researchers about their marine science exhibits, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Hatfield campus, enjoy a show on the sounds of the sea, and learn about the latest advances in whale research from keynote speakers KC Bierlich and Clara Bird from the GEMM Lab's GRANITE Project. Grammy-winning vocal ensemble TonalityTickets on sale now for “You Are Not Alone,” directed by Alexander Lloyd Blake at 7 p.m., April 13 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality creates gorgeous concerts focusing on issues rarely present in choral music. At PRAx, Tonality takes on the topic of mental health awareness. A pre-concert program puts the spotlight on community and OSU mental health providers. This evening is dedicated to them. National Pesticide Information Center Open House: Join the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) for their open house from noon to 4 p.m., April 17, at 314 Weniger Hall. CTL Mutual Mentors Institute: Looking for a novel way to conduct classroom observations? Join the Center for Teaching and Learning this spring for the Mutual Mentors Institute. This five-week hybrid institute offers opportunities to learn and apply proven interpersonal skills, targeted data collection processes and structured reflective dialogue. łatwa ina Royalty programTo support relations between the Native and Indigenous OSU community and broader Tribal nations and Indigenous communities in the region, the łatwa ina Royalty Program offers an OSU student an opportunity to represent the university at the łatwa ina Pow-Wow (May 18 in Gill Coliseum) and surrounding cultural events. This is a paid internship with a travel stipend and OSU regalia. Apply by April 28.

UPDATED! 2024 Homecoming Court applications: A valuable, unique and rewarding college experience awaits six undergraduate students who will be chosen as 2024 Homecoming Court Ambassadors to the OSU Alumni Association. Awardees receive a one-time $1000 scholarship and get to voice their ideas with alumni and business and university leaders while representing OSU at events throughout the year. Traffic and Maintenance

Fairbanks: As part of the Fairbanks Hall Renovation project, the Fairbanks Hall west parking lot will be closed March 21-29 for gutter work on the building. All ADA parking spaces in the parking lot will be closed. The sidewalks and walkways bordering Fairbanks Hall on all sides of the building will be closed in phases to allow for equipment to be maneuvered around the area. These closures will be intermittent. This includes the walkways on the north and west sides of Fairbanks Hall, the west sidewalk on 26th Street and the north sidewalk on Jefferson Way. Staff will be present in the area to help pedestrians navigate around the sidewalk closures. Pedestrians may use the east sidewalk on 26th Street, the south sidewalk on Jefferson Way or the walkway west of the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center as alternate routes.

Pride Center: As part of the Pride Center Renovation project, a section of SW May Avenue will be closed between SW 15th and SW 16th Streets March 20-22. The closure will be in effect from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. daily.

Southwest Benton Place: As part of the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts project, the west sidewalk on Southwest Benton Place will be closed between Langton Place and Washington Way Tuesday, March 19, through Friday, March 22. Three street parking spaces will also be closed near the intersection of Benton Place and Washington Way. 

Pride Center: As part of the Pride Center Renovation project, the entrance to the B2 parking lot on Southwest A Avenue (west of the Pride Center) will be closed March 19-22. This closure will be in effect from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. daily. The parking lot will remain fully open. The entrance lane will be closed; the exit lane will remain open.

Parking lots closed: As part of the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, the Park Terrace Street East and Park Terrace Street West (A2) parking lots will be permanently closed, starting Monday, March 18 (view map). Southwest Park Terrace Place will also be permanently closed north of Plageman Student Health Center. Construction fencing will be placed around the area in preparation for further construction activity.
