Study shows short pesticide exposure harms fish (Northwest Public Broadcasting)

Although pesticides can rid your home of cockroaches or farm fields of unwanted insects, they also can harm fish and potentially even people, according to a new study from Oregon State University.

 

USDA gives Oregon State hemp center $10 million for study (Capital Press)

Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center has received $10 million from the USDA to work with 13 Native American tribes and develop manufacturing capabilities for materials and products made from hemp.
 

OSU Press book on kingfishers wins Burroughs Medal (LIFE@OSU)

An Oregon State University Press book on kingfishers has received the 2024 Burroughs Medal for Distinguished Natural History Writing. It’s the third time an OSU Press title has won the Burroughs Medal, which OSU Press Director Tom Booth says is unprecedented for a university press.

BEE Research SeminarMillie Chapman from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis will give the research seminar "Addressing Biodiversity Loss in an Age of Algorithms" at 9 a.m. March 13 in KEC1001.

Religion and Social Change: A Dialogue: Eliza Young Barstow, senior instructor of religious studies, is hosting a series of panels featuring a diverse collection of religious leaders from the Willamette Valley who have agreed to gather and discuss challenging social issues. The sessions will be panel discussions, with questions asked by Barstow. Toward the end of each session, there will be time for audience questions. The session at 4 p.m. March 13 in the La Raza Room of the Memorial Union is on access to guns. Admission is free and open to all.

Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology Seminar: This week, the seminar welcomes Neil Carter from the University of Michigan. Carter will give a talk on “Wildlife ecology and conservation in a brighter world.” His interdisciplinary research examines the complex dynamics that characterize interactions between wildlife and people (e.g., provision of ecosystem services, conflicts) in a global change context. 4 p.m. March 13, LINC 302 and via Zoom at beav.es/eecb

A Walk with Wildland Fire: John Bailey, professor in the College of Forestry, will discuss his recently published book “A Walk with Wildland Fire” on the history, ecology, behavior and management of wildland fire and the role of sustainable forest management in addressing the emerging wildfire crisis. Design industry Portland-area social: The OSU Innovation & Design Network is hosting a lively social for design (apparel, interior, graphic) and merchandising professionals to connect and collaborate. NEW! OSU Extension to offer calving school: The OSU Extension Service will host two calving schools in Corvallis this year,1:30-5 p.m. April 19 and 1:30-5 p.m. April 22. These classes are designed for ranchers or farm workers who are new to calving. Topics will include nutritional and management strategies, calving facilities, the calving process, newborn calf care and dystocia, along with a hands-on activity. NEW! Mental Health First Aid: Develop the skills and confidence to help others in crisis and promote healing. Participants complete a full day training, which covers: mental health conditions, substance abuse disorders, mental health stigma, community resources for getting help, how to respond to a person in crisis. NEW! ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training): ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop; anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. NEW! Mass timber exhibit: Want to see a cool example of mass timber engineering? Visit the College of Forestry’s PFSC Atrium to check out a project created by OSU students enrolled in WSE 425/525 “Timber Tectonics in the Digital Age,” a collaborative course between OSU’s Department of Wood Science and Engineering and the University of Oregon’s Department of Architecture. Male participants sought: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of an FDA-approved drug on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for male study participants between the age of 18-59 who are non-smokers and do not have diabetes. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately 4 months. Adventures in STEM education video series launches: In honor of National Science in Education Day (March 15), the College of Education is launching a four-part video series highlighting S.T.E.M. programs at Condon High School in Condon, Oregon. One of the school’s science teachers is Bryce Fowler (OSU, 2023) who helped initiate some unique STEM programs for his students. The video series can be accessed through the college’s YouTube page and website. Videos begin posting March 11 and continue through March 21.

Student Fellowship Opportunity: The one-year PRAx Student Fellowship offers graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to develop a creative or journalistic project connected with OSU research. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, will engage in ongoing networking and professional development with mentors and will present final projects in a public exhibition. Accelerate cohort: Not sure what the next step is in your business venture? The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently accepting applications for its virtual spring Accelerate cohort which begins April 9. Accelerate is open to individuals or teams who want to launch a high-growth business or want to explore the commercialization potential of a technology. Upon completion of the nine-week program, participants will have an elevator pitch, a five-minute pitch deck completed, product market validation, feedback from many mentors, and can qualify teams to receive NSF i-Corps funds. This closure will be in effect from 7 a.m.. to 1 p.m. daily. The entrance lane will be closed; the exit lane will remain open. Alternate entrances will be available on Southwest 17th and 15th streets. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site.

Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, Campus Way will be closed between 26th Street and Memorial Place starting March 12 through March 15 to allow for crane activity. The south entrance of Kelley Engineering Center will be closed. The north sidewalk in this section of Campus Way will be closed to pedestrians. The south sidewalk will remain open as a detour. Bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed in both directions. A bicycle detour will be available along the walkway on the south side of Milam Hall. Parking lots closed: As part of the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, the Park Terrace Street East and Park Terrace Street West (A2) parking lots will be permanently closed, starting Monday, March 18 (view map). SW Park Terrace Place will also be permanently closed north of Plageman Student Health Center. Construction fencing will be placed around the area in preparation for further construction activity.

Intersection closure: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, the Washington Way and 30th Street intersection will be closed March 4 through April 15.
