OSU receives $10 million grant to work with tribes on hemp economic development (KEZI)

Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center has received $10 million in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work with 13 Native American tribes on hemp-based economic development in the western United States, the college said.

Sean Matthews is a research scientist at Oregon State University and is one of the authors of the study, done in collaboration with the Hoopa Valley tribe northeast of Eureka, and led by Cale Myers, then a graduate student at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Leigh Torres, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University who has documented gray whale sightings in the Atlantic, said this could be “both a good thing and a bad thing.”

Religion and Social Change: A Dialogue: Eliza Young Barstow, senior instructor of religious studies, is hosting a series of panels featuring a diverse collection of religious leaders from the Willamette Valley who have agreed to gather and discuss challenging social issues. The sessions will be panel discussions, with questions asked by Barstow. Toward the end of each session, there will be time for audience questions. The session at 4 p.m. March 13 in the La Raza Room of the Memorial Union is on access to guns. Admission is free and open to all.

Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology Seminar: This week, the seminar welcomes Neil Carter from the University of Michigan. Carter will give a talk on “Wildlife ecology and conservation in a brighter world.” His interdisciplinary research examines the complex dynamics that characterize interactions between wildlife and people (e.g., provision of ecosystem services, conflicts) in a global change context. 4 p.m. March 13, LINC 302 and via Zoom at beav.es/eecb

NEW! Male participants sought: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of an FDA-approved drug on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for male study participants between the age of 18-59 who are non-smokers and do not have diabetes. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately 4 months. Adventures in STEM education video series launches: In honor of National Science in Education Day (March 15), the College of Education is launching a four-part video series highlighting S.T.E.M. programs at Condon High School in Condon, Oregon. One of the school’s science teachers is Bryce Fowler (OSU, 2023) who helped initiate some unique STEM programs for his students. The video series can be accessed through the college’s YouTube page and website. Videos begin posting March 11 and continue through March 21.

Student Fellowship Opportunity: The one-year PRAx Student Fellowship offers graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to develop a creative or journalistic project connected with OSU research. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, will engage in ongoing networking and professional development with mentors and will present final projects in a public exhibition. Accelerate cohort: Not sure what the next step is in your business venture? The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently accepting applications for its virtual spring Accelerate cohort which begins April 9. Accelerate is open to individuals or teams who want to launch a high-growth business or want to explore the commercialization potential of a technology. Upon completion of the nine-week program, participants will have an elevator pitch, a five-minute pitch deck completed, product market validation, feedback from many mentors, and can qualify teams to receive NSF i-Corps funds. Traffic and Maintenance

Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, Campus Way will be closed between 26th Street and Memorial Place starting March 12 through March 15 to allow for crane activity. The south entrance of Kelley Engineering Center will be closed. The north sidewalk in this section of Campus Way will be closed to pedestrians. The south sidewalk will remain open as a detour. Bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed in both directions. A bicycle detour will be available along the walkway on the south side of Milam Hall. Parking lots closed: As part of the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, the Park Terrace Street East and Park Terrace Street West (A2) parking lots will be permanently closed, starting Monday, March 18 (view map). SW Park Terrace Place will also be permanently closed north of Plageman Student Health Center. Construction fencing will be placed around the area in preparation for further construction activity.

Intersection closure: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, the Washington Way and 30th Street intersection will be closed March 4 through April 15.
