Science and wonder: When whales strand on our coast (KLCC)

On this edition of Oregon On The Record you’ll hear from two authoritative voices about whales, whale strandings, and whale deaths that happen from time to time along the coast. Tiffany Boothe, an assistant director of the Seaside Aquarium, and Jim Rice, a member of Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute, weigh in on the life and death of whales along Oregon’s shores.

Stephanie Brown has a pretty simple work rule. “What I like to think about is think of how many times you have eaten food and haven’t gotten sick,” said Brown, a food safety specialist at Oregon State University’s Food Innovation Center.

 

One thousand new child care spots - and counting - thanks to Central Oregon partnership (Bend Bulletin)

Spelled out by a 2020 report by researchers at Oregon State University, all of Oregon’s 36 counties were found to be “child care deserts” — meaning just a single spot was open for every three children. In Deschutes County, the desert was deemed particularly dire: Fewer than 25% of children under the age of 5 had access to child care, the report found.
 

Land steward course offered online (Capital Press)

Oregon State University’s Forestry and Natural Resources Extension will offer a hybrid online land stewards course from April 24 through June 27.

The exhibit is now at the Hatfield Marine Science Center's Marine Studies Building in Newport and will be on display until mid-June. Music à la Carte: OSU Percussion StudioStudents from the OSU Percussion Studio, under the tutelage of Justin Preece and Robert Brudvig, present their winter concert on a variety of percussion instruments, from marimba to water gong. Noon March 8 in MU Lounge; admission is free.

FYI Friday – Fall 2023 Student Experience Survey Findings and Recommendations: Since Spring of 2020, OSU has surveyed undergraduate Corvallis campus students to better understand their experience and gather their perspective on key areas. OSU Theatre Presents: The Learned Ladies: The road to true love never runs smoothly and especially in this satirical comedy by the witty and masterful Molière. Set in 1672, Clitandre seeks the hand of his beloved Henriette, but her mother Philaminte has other plans for her youngest daughter. NEW! Adventures in STEM education video series launches: In honor of National Science in Education Day (March 15), the College of Education is launching a four-part video series highlighting S.T.E.M. programs at Condon High School in Condon, Oregon. One of the school’s science teachers is Bryce Fowler (OSU, 2023) who helped initiate some unique STEM programs for his students. The video series can be accessed through the college’s YouTube page and website. Videos begin posting March 11 and continue through March 21.

NEW! Student Fellowship Opportunity: The one-year PRAx Student Fellowship offers graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to develop a creative or journalistic project connected with OSU research. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, will engage in ongoing networking and professional development with mentors and will present final projects in a public exhibition. Traffic and Maintenance

Parking lots closed: As part of the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, the Park Terrace Street East and Park Terrace Street West (A2) parking lots will be permanently closed, starting Monday, March 18 (view map). SW Park Terrace Place will also be permanently closed north of Plageman Student Health Center. Construction fencing will be placed around the area in preparation for further construction activity.

Intersection closure: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, the Washington Way and 30th Street intersection will be closed March 4 through April 15.
