Jim Rivers, a wildlife ecologist at Oregon State University, wanted to answer this morbid mystery. Not because of a macabre fascination, but because sometimes forest managers want to more dead trees on the landscape.
Oregon State University will use a $3.5 million grant to lead a multi-state effort focused on developing new varieties of naked or hulless barley that appeal to chefs, brewers, distillers and farmers. (see also KTVZ)

A new exhibit at Oregon State University-Cascades features one of the first Black women to homestead in Oregon. Letitia Carson immigrated to Oregon in 1845 using the Oregon Trail. She also brought on two successful lawsuits against a white defendant over her right to own property.
Institutions like Oregon State University would be preparing to send out financial aid packages to students in March, said the school’s Director of Financial Aid Keith Raab. “Obviously, we won’t be able to do that this year because we won’t even have the data to get started on until early March,” said Raab.

OSU International Film Festival: The Lost Salmon. "The Lost Salmon" chronicles the life and impact Chinook salmon have on people and the environment. NEW! OSU MANRRS fundraiser: From 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Feb. 2, OSU MANNRS will be holding a fundraiser on the SEC Plaza, featuring hot chocolate and churros. These fundraisers allow the group to send members to conferences across the U.S., embark on service-learning trips including Puerto Rico as well as etiquette dinners, and to add community-building events such as painting tote bags to their meetings. NEW! Music à la Carte: Morris Northcutt, trumpet, with Lauren Servias, collaborative pianist. Multi-award-winning trumpeter Morris Northcutt hails from the state of Washington and is known for his lyricism, artistry and ability to cross the boundary between classical and jazz. Lauren Servias is a Corvallis-based performer and teacher and served on the music faculty at OSU for nine years, where she was the music director and pianist for OSU Opera and collaborative pianist for OSU’s Bella Voce choir. Tibetan Buddhist Visualization and Mantra: Participants will practice "The Treasury of Blessings," a sādhanā focused on the historical Buddha Sakyamuni. This particular sādhanā is profound but also great for beginners, with simple visualizations and recitation of mantras. American Strings: Bob Santelli in the Spotlight. 7 p.m., Feb. 1. Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts Bob Santelli reflects on his career and his six years as the artistic curator and host of OSU's popular American Strings series in a conversation with Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Popular Music Kelly Bosworth. Critical Questions Lecture Series -- "Rhetorical Genre as a Comparative Method: The Case of Chinese Treaties." Join us to hear how a rhetorical genre lens enables Hui Wu, a scholar of comparative studies in rhetoric and global feminist rhetorics, to read the Chinese rhetorical treatises with gender sensitivity and historical accuracy and how her translations of the treatises reflect her reading. 4 p.m., Feb. 1 in Memorial Union 208.

Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar: Emily Yeh (University of CO Boulder) will discuss some of the multidimensional impacts climate change is having on the Tibetan Plateau. The talk will also explain climate justice and why Tibetan herders are experiencing impacts of injustice through environmental change and the policies being proposed for adaptation. 4:30 p.m., Feb. 5 in the Journey Room (MU 104). Internationalization Grant: The deadline for the 2023-24 Internationalization Grant has been extended to 5 p.m. Feb. 16. Grants of up to $5,000 are offered for projects that advance internationalization within one of three tracks, aligned with “Prosperity Widely Shared”: Research and Innovation; Global and Intercultural Learning; and Career and Workforce Development.
