But the research also shows that dam removal will not solve all the issues for the migrating fish. We get into the details with Sascha Hallett, a fish parasitologist at Oregon State University, and Julie Alexander, a fish ecologist at OSU. Both are among a flock of authors on the research.
To Regan A.R. Gurung, a professor of psychology at Oregon State University, the Martella paper underscores that “research in the classroom is really tough.” These studies did not meet all 12 internal validity controls, but research rarely does, says Gurung, who teaches research methods. This evidence, says Gurung — who is also associate vice provost and executive director of Oregon State’s Center for Teaching and Learning — “is still enough for us to say to an instructor, Really try and do some more active learning.”
Loren Davis, an archaeologist at Oregon State University who was not involved in the research, expressed concern to Science that older carbon-14 in the lake water could have been absorbed into the plants which produced the seeds. To help settle these concerns, the researchers have now added two new dating methods that both agree with their former findings.
Recently, Oregon State University unveiled a goal to double student enrollment at the Cascades campus by 2030. As the campus has grown, its faculty and staff have grown with it.

NEW! An Evening with Jaiyah: Sports Legend and Groundbreaker. Jaiyah’s story as the first transgender person to compete in a FIFA Soccer tournament is featured in "Next Goal Wins," a Hollywood film directed by Taika Waititi. She has used her platform to travel the world and advocate for SOGIE visibility and inclusion in sports. She was also recently featured in Out Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. Hawaii fundraiser: The devastating fires in Lahaina in August resulted in the loss of life and property. OSU students, staff and community members who are from Maui and Hawai’i have been directly and indirectly impacted significantly. OSU Kokua Maui–Hui O Hawai’i is taking the lead along with other OSU entities to organize the collection and drop offs, which includes 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Nov. 30 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 1, at the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 3, at Valley Football Center. Same Storm, Different Boats: Mental Health in Communities of Color. Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from disproportionately higher rates of more severe mental health outcomes due to a range of social and economic factors: inaccessibility of culturally competent mental health care, cultural stigma, physical and mental health consequences of discrimination and more. In this workshop, a clinician presenter from Lyra Health will cover: race-based traumatic stress, stigma and cultural mistrust; barriers to accessing care and how to overcome them; culturally informed self-care strategies; and how to access culturally-responsive mental health services. Onboarding forums held via Zoom: The President and Provost’s Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PPLC) is hosting two additional onboarding forums via Zoom for employees of color and supervisors of employees of color in December. DFA Risk Appetite and Risk Assessment Tools: Train the Trainer. Insurance and Risk Management Services will facilitate a workshop for unit leaders and supervisors to provide exposure to the DFA risk appetite statements and risk assessment tools. Attendees will gain hands-on practice and develop the skills necessary to assist other employees in understanding and incorporating the DFA risk appetite statements and risk assessment tools into their work. Payroll Office changes in December: During the month of December, Payroll is having some work done to rearrange and add workspace in our office. Our windows will be closed and phones will go to voicemail, but we will have a representative at the front desk in B100 (Business Affairs) and will be returning phone calls and responding to emails as quickly as possible every day. A more open space will be available starting in the new year.
$15K of funding available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in January 2024. Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Dec. 8. Learn more and apply.

Internship supplement: New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) offers $5,000 supplemental funding for summer internships in natural sciences to self-identifying Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian undergrads enrolled at OSU. NBTS also pairs students with mentors, meets as a cohort in the summer, and includes a small scholarship and support to attend science conferences. Are you exposed to loud noise at work? Find out more about OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program and Noise Control Plan. The goal of OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program is to monitor and protect employees who have the potential to develop noise-induced hearing loss – a preventable, permanent and progressive health issue. In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health Services provides annual hearing tests for those exposed to loud noise on the job. Training is available through the EH&S website. Contact Occupational Health or Environmental Health and Safety with questions.
FYI Friday proposals: Office of Human Resources Learning & Development is now accepting FYI Friday presentation proposals for Winter and Spring 2024. Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping.
