OSU officials said that their fall enrollment of 36,636 students is up nearly 1,400 students or 4% higher than 2022. For the 10th consecutive year, OSU is the largest university in Oregon, according to the college. (see also OPB, KLCC, KXL)
First-year student enrollment at Oregon State University–Cascades has increased for the ninth consecutive year, with a 2023 fall class of 225 students representing the largest in OSU-Cascades’ history and a 10.3% increase over the previous year, the Bend campus announced Tuesday.

Throughout the entire Gaza Strip, including southern Gaza, at least 38,000 buildings appear to be damaged, or an estimated 13 to 18 percent of all buildings, according to the analysis by two researchers, Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University and Corey Scher of the CUNY Graduate Center. The assessment identified individual building footprints that were most likely damaged based on an analysis of satellite imagery ending on Sunday. (see also BBC News)
Lead author William Ripple, a professor at Oregon State University said it was likely that annual average temperatures would start to be recorded above 1.5C. Ted Daniel Stock, 18, allegedly posted the threat publicly on Instagram, writing “I’m going to place an improvised explosive device (IED) inside one of your stupid robots,” the affidavit states. STEM Education in South Africa and the US: Join the College of Education and the STEM Research Center from 3-4 p.m., Nov. 8, in Furman 404 for a lecture by Derek Fish, a current Fulbright scholar at OSU with 30 years of experience running a science center in South Africa. Fish will discuss the challenges of STEM education in a country that experienced major political changes after Apartheid, massive continuing inequality and racial tensions, and enormous linguistic and cultural diversity. Paul Lawrence Farber Humanities Endowment Fund Lecture: The Paul Lawrence Farber Humanities Endowment Fund presents Elizabeth O’Brien, assistant professor of the history of medicine and of Latin America at UCLA. The Dive of a Lifetime to the Deepest Place on Earth: Dawn Wright, a.k.a. "Deepsea Dawn,” is the first Black person to dive to the deepest spot on the entire planet - Challenger Deep. NEW! Pedestrian experiment: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering is seeking participants for a study examining how people use intersections. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (glasses and contacts are OK) and feel comfortable walking approximately 1 mile total. Dungeness crab vessel equipment study: The public is invited to participate in a laboratory-based study conducted by Oregon State University titled “Improving Dungeness Crab Vessel Equipment," led by Jay Kim and Laurel Kinel. They are attempting to characterize physical risk factors associated with Dungeness crab harvesting tasks and evaluate the efficacy of ergonomic interventions in reducing the physical risk factors. Participants must be 21 or older, with no current pain or a history of musculoskeletal disorders. Deadline extended: The Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until Nov. 30. Faculty can receive up to $15,000 in funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource (OER) for your course. OER are openly licensed course materials that save students money and make higher education more accessible. Faculty Senate Elections – Faculty with Split Appointments: Non-tenured faculty who have split appointments between two apportionment units may choose with which unit they wish to be apportioned for Faculty Senate purposes. For example, if a faculty member has a split appointment between Agricultural Sciences and Science, they may choose one or the other (FTE will not be split between apportionment units). This choice will determine Faculty Senate representation. No later than noon Nov. 14, complete and submit the survey at https://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1LcbN37K4QRvr02 to indicate with which apportionment unit you wish to be included.
Faculty Senate Elections – Interest in serving as a faculty senator or declining senator election: All currently employed academic, research, extension and professional faculty, regardless of FTE, are eligible to be elected to a Faculty Senator position and represent faculty in their respective Faculty Senate apportionment unit. If you wish to either decline to have your name placed on the ballot, or you wish to indicate a strong interest in serving if elected, complete and submit the survey at https://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cYfsOGz1CtLSjhY no later than noon Nov. 14. Faculty must decline each year.
NEW! 15th Street: As part of the Kerr South Parking Lot project, there will be intermittent delays on SW 15th Street due to construction activities on Thursday, Nov. 9 and Friday, Nov. 10. A single lane will be closed at a time, with traffic being allowed to pass through the opposite lane. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. The impacted area will be between SW Washington Avenue and SW Adams Avenue near the Kerr Administration Building and Callahan Hall. Drivers should expect delays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days. Sidewalks will remain open in the area, but the crosswalk at SW Adams Avenue will be closed. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site.
Traffic diverted to temporary Van Buren bridge starting in mid-November: Commuters to campus may notice a traffic pattern change between downtown Corvallis and the east side of the Willamette River. Starting in mid-November, eastbound traffic will be diverted onto a temporary bridge on NW Van Buren Ave. The temporary bridge includes a separate path for pedestrians and bicyclists. The paths underneath the bridge will remain closed. A temporary signal at NW Van Buren Ave. and NW First Street will control traffic flow and NW First Street will change from two-way to one-way traffic for one block north and south of the Van Buren bridge. Access to NW Van Buren Avenue from NW First Street will be restricted. For more information, visit the ODOT Van Buren Bridge project page.
May Ave: As part of the Pride Center Renovation project, a section of SW May Avenue will be closed Nov. 6-8. The impacted section is located between SW 15th and SW 16th Streets, directly behind the Pride Center. Several parking spaces along May Avenue will also be closed.
Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way will be closed between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place starting Monday, Nov. 6 through Wednesday, Nov. 15 to allow for crane activity. The south entrance at Kelley Engineering Center will also be closed.
Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
