“One of the strategies that we’re going to have to employ, I believe, is to have more barley, and more diverse barley, grown in more places,” says Patrick Hayes, professor of barley breeding and genetics at Oregon State University.
Lori Kayes and Devon Quick have designed the large-enrollment biology courses they teach at Oregon State University around active learning that happens in assigned small groups. That gives students a home base in a giant lecture hall.
“These perceptions can reflect their own past experiences, whether individually or with people they know,” said Oregon State University, or OSU, instructor Jill Hoxmeier, who co-authored the study.
“The dam removals will likely go a long way towards restoring balance in the river,” said Sascha Hallett, a fish parasitologist at Oregon State University who has studied the river for two decades. “Certainly under certain circumstances, there are going to be disease outbreaks, like with people and pathogens. But we envision that they are not going to be as large and not going to be as frequent as we have observed in the past.”
Options to replace plastic packaging is the focus of research at Oregon State University where they are looking at recycling fruit waste from processing plants to do that. Professor Yanyun Zhao says with more and more people getting their news online, there is less and less old newspapers to use when creating packing materials, so they are looking for options.
Oregon State University-Cascades will host a science pub talk Nov. 14 on sharks and research at the Chapple Big Fish Lab at the university's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

NEW! Alert system test on Saturday: Benton County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a test of the Linn-Benton ALERT system at 3 p.m., Nov. 4. The test will cover all of Benton County. All traditional land phone lines in the 9-1-1 database will receive the message. Those who have registered other devices with Linn-Benton ALERT will also receive the test message. Recipients will be given the option to confirm receipt of the message on each phone or device. Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild presents “Artistic License:” The exhibit features more than 80 black-and-white and color photographs by 25 members of the PhotoArts Guild who were asked to exercise their creative freedom for the group’s 13th biennial exhibit at the Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center. Art exhibit: The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology has announced the opening of an art exhibition showcasing eight larger than life works by Maxwell Eckelbarger. Displayed on the first and second floors of Cordley Hall, the exhibition is made up of two collections on loan from the Plant Cell Atlas Consortium and Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Plant Biology (Stanford, CA). The banners are available to visit during business hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. in the hallways of the first and second floor of the recently remodeled West Wing of Cordley Hall.

Deadline extended: The Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until Nov. 30. Faculty can receive up to $15,000 in funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource (OER) for your course. OER are openly licensed course materials that save students money and make higher education more accessible. Blood sugar study participants sought: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of an FDA-approved drug on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for study participants between the age of 18-59, who are nonsmokers, and who do not have diabetes. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately 4 months. Faculty Senate Elections – Faculty with Split Appointments: Non-tenured faculty who have split appointments between two apportionment units may choose with which unit they wish to be apportioned for Faculty Senate purposes. For example, if a faculty member has a split appointment between Agricultural Sciences and Science, they may choose one or the other (FTE will not be split between apportionment units). This choice will determine Faculty Senate representation. No later than noon Nov. 14, complete and submit the survey at https://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1LcbN37K4QRvr02 to indicate with which apportionment unit you wish to be included.

Yoga and Meditation Class Scholarships for OSU Undergrads: OSU undergraduates are invited to apply for financial support to attend classes at Marigold: the OSU Center for Contemplative Practice. Initial scholarship covers 80% of class fees for yoga, meditation and dance classes. Additional funding is available for upcoming programs such as mindful self-compassion, lucid dreaming and more. NEW! Sackett Hall: As part of the Nash Hall Cooling Tower Replacement project, the Sackett Hall North parking lot (#3303) will be partially closed on Monday, Nov. 6 to allow for crane activity. The closure will impact parking spaces on the east side of the lot, closest to Nash Hall. The southwest basement and south first floor entrances to Nash Hall will also be closed. The northeast entrance and the loading dock will remain open.
NEW! Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way will be closed between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place starting Monday, Nov. 6 through Wednesday, Nov. 15 to allow for crane activity. The south entrance at Kelley Engineering Center will also be closed.
Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
