Now that weed is mostly legal, hemp should be booming. But it's not. (TIME)

Well, not exactly, says Jeffrey Steiner, director of the Global Hemp Innovation Center at Oregon State University. “From the standpoint of hemp being this miraculous, environmentally friendly crop that is going to solve all our problems, it’s folklore.” The fact that hemp hasn’t lived up to its promise has as much to do with overhype—it’s still just a plant, even if it does have several unique qualities—as it does the complexities of the U.S. agricultural system, the long shadow of past restrictions, current regulatory laws, and Big Cotton.

RAIN Catalysts seek to promote North coast maritime industry (North Coast Citizen)

RAIN started working on the coast in Lincoln County in 2016, partnering with Oregon State University to help maritime professionals develop new products and technologies. They have assisted in the development of a float switch to ensure boats remain floating and a smart surf fin which gauges wave quality and are helping with the development of a device to remove jellyfish from crab lines.

"It’s the Water" art reception: Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center presents “It’s the Water: An Exhibition of Painting and Photography by Seven Artists.” Featuring April Waters’ Antarctica Paintings and invited artists Rich Bergeman, Duncan Berry, Gary Buhler, Jeremy Burke, Rebecca Kiser and Katia Kyte. These artists focus on expressing the power, beauty and mystery of water, showing nature’s complex interrelationships. Reception 3-6 p.m. April 8. Meet the artists. Navy competition: Help cheer on the OSU Naval ROTC unit all day April 8 as they host the annual Northwest Navy competition between the NROTC units of Oregon State University, University of Idaho/Washington State, University of Washington and University of Utah. It will be held all over campus and units participate in competitions such as color guard, regulation drill, physical readiness training (PRT), weapons relay, academics, volleyball, basketball, soccer and other similar activities. Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet April 13-14 to consider tuition rates for the next academic year, the construction of a proposed student success center at OSU-Cascades, the university’s 10-year business forecast and stipends for certain members of public boards. The board will meet from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 14 in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus. OSU Voice and Theatre: Fledermaus. An evening full of high notes and high jinks. OSU voice and theater students collaborate to perform "Fledermaus," Strauss' well-loved operetta, full of waltzes and pranks, in English with chamber orchestra. Out of the Darkness Campus Walk: Raise awareness and bring hope and healing to those who have been directly impacted by suicide by joining the Out of the Darkness Walk. Untold stories from Oregon’s past: New student research in Oregon’s archives. Students in Marisa Chappell’s Winter 2023 History Lab are presenting at the Oregon Historical Society at noon April 10. Michaela Bauer, Cecily Evonuk, Grace Knutsen, Jada Krening and Sharon Salgado will discuss their research on women in Oregon history: women who were targeted for eugenic sterilization, served on the front in World War II, formed a Chicanx student organization, established a lesbian commune in Southern Oregon and fought for civil rights in Portland. https://www.ohs.org/events/untold-stories-from-oregons-past.cfm.

Sci-Comm talk: Ehren Pflugfelder, author of "Geoengineering Persuasion & the Climate Crisis: A Geologic Rhetoric" and associate professor of technical and scientific writing in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, will discuss “Undermining the Field: A Counter-history of Technical Communication and Risk,” his new project that unearths technical communication’s problematic entanglements with extractive industries and the resulting unequal — often unjust — distribution of risk and harm. 4:30 p.m., April 10, MU 213 Pan-Afrikan Sankofa Room.

Seeking Volunteers for a Research Study: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE) is seeking participants for a research study who are at least 18 years old and possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). UPDATED! Yarn donations requested: The OSU Craft Center has a weekly crochet club for OSU students. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to find community, learn and engage in a stress-releasing craft. Internationalization grant application now open: The Office of Faculty Affairs Internationalization Grant is open to all OSU professional and academic faculty and INTO OSU employees. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda. Pharmacy research program: The College of Pharmacy Summer Undergraduate Research Program is now accepting applications through May 1. Opportunities are available to participate in hands-on bench research in laboratories that seek to discover new medicines, novel and innovative means of drug delivery, new targets for drug therapy and to improve current drug therapy regime for patients. At the conclusion of the summer term, students will present their research projects at the College of Pharmacy Undergraduate Research Symposium. Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until May 19. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Outstanding Diversity Advocate Award nominations: The Outstanding Diversity Advocate Award is awarded to a member of the OSU community who actively promotes and enhances diversity, equity and inclusion. Recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium. Eye tracking study participants wanted: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks research study participants who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The study purpose is to better understand driving habits while viewing videos and wearing eye tracking glasses. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which requires a time commitment of approximately 45 minutes and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. Ergonomics: The University Health & Safety Committee wants to promote health and safety by providing information on ergonomics and safe lifting techniques. Indigenous undergrad summer internship supplemental funding application deadline April 10: The New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) program offers OSU undergrads self-identifying as Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian, supplemental funding ($3750) for summer internships in natural sciences. Internships must be at least eight weeks long and interns will meet with NBTS mentors over the summer. More info and application at https://opencampus.oregonstate.edu/nbts.

Art+Science Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of two disciplines. Fellows will develop a creative, journalistic or scholarly project informed by engagement with science and art, music, theater, multi-media or creative writing. Research equipment reserve funds: In partnership with the Research Council, the Research Office is now accepting Research Equipment Reserve Funds (RERF) applications to strengthen the research infrastructure. RERF may be used to acquire, repair, renovate, or improve capital equipment directly used for research. The application deadline is April 10. Traffic and  Maintenance

NEW! Washington Way:  As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 30th and 35th streets will be closed for paving 6 a.m.-2 p.m. April 7. The intersection at 35th St. will be open all day for north-south traffic. Expect to see flaggers in the intersection from 8 a.m. to noon. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
