The ceremony closed with journalist-turned-author (and OSU assistant professor) Sindya Bhanoo receiving the Ken Kesey Award for Fiction for “Seeking Fortune Elsewhere: Stories,” a debut collection that elevates intricate narratives of South Indian immigrants. The stories tread on hope and regret.
A recent Oregon Wine Symposium presentation by Dr. Vaughn Walton, entomologist at Oregon State University (OSU), outlined Oregon’s bout with the bug. Vaughn studied vine mealybug in his native South Africa before decamping to California to fight it. Fifteen years ago, he moved to Oregon to escape it. Or so he thought.
Out to sea: Sara Hoyt with the Office of the Registrar says, “This is the NOAA research vessel Bell M. Shimada headed out of Yaquina Bay on March 18. As I was headed south on 101 over the Yaquina Bay Bridge, I noticed it pulling away from the dock and headed straight to the South Jetty to get a better view. This vessel is MASSIVE, and it was impressive to watch it navigate through the jetty during high tide. OSU and NOAA have a collaborative relationship in Newport called the Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystem and Resources Studies (CIMERS).” We are accepting photo submissions at osutoday@oregonstate.edu.

Focus on Food & Nutrition — BIPOC cooking class: Food, friends and fellowship are vital ingredients to wellness in communities of color. This event is associated with National Public Health Week 2023 (April 3-9). Its overall theme is “centering and celebrating cultures in health,” and Sunday’s daily topic is “food and nutrition.”
Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet April 13-14 to consider tuition rates for the next academic year, the construction of a proposed student success center at OSU-Cascades, the university’s 10-year business forecast and stipends for certain members of public boards. The board will meet from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 14 in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus. OSU Voice and Theatre: Fledermaus. An evening full of high notes and high jinks. OSU voice and theater students collaborate to perform "Fledermaus," Strauss' well-loved operetta, full of waltzes and pranks, in English with chamber orchestra. Navy competition: Help cheer on the OSU Naval ROTC unit all day April 8 as they host the annual Northwest Navy competition between the NROTC units of Oregon State University, University of Idaho/Washington State, University of Washington and University of Utah. It will be held all over campus and units participate in competitions such as color guard, regulation drill, physical readiness training (PRT), weapons relay, academics, volleyball, basketball, soccer and other similar activities. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda. Pharmacy research program: The College of Pharmacy Summer Undergraduate Research Program is now accepting applications through May 1. Opportunities are available to participate in hands-on bench research in laboratories that seek to discover new medicines, novel and innovative means of drug delivery, new targets for drug therapy and to improve current drug therapy regime for patients. Eye tracking study participants wanted: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks research study participants who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The study purpose is to better understand driving habits while viewing videos and wearing eye tracking glasses. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which requires a time commitment of approximately 45 minutes and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. Indigenous undergrad summer internship supplemental funding application deadline April 10: The New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) program offers OSU undergrads self-identifying as Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian, supplemental funding ($3750) for summer internships in natural sciences. Art+Science Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of two disciplines. Fellows will develop a creative, journalistic or scholarly project informed by engagement with science and art, music, theater, multi-media or creative writing.
