Susan Haig, a professor of wildlife ecology at Oregon State University who was not involved with the study, similarly said the technology today could be best used to save species on the brink of extinction. But she disagreed with the study's authors about the limits of using CRISPR for de-extinction projects. For one, she said, CRISPR may be in its infancy now, but the technology has evolved significantly since it was first developed more than a decade ago.

Sunny estuary: A sunny day on the Coos Estuary on the southern Oregon coast as OSU researchers in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences work on a coastal project on wetland carbon storage capacity, greenhouse gas emissions and sea-level rise. Submitted by Christopher Janousek, assistant professor with the department.

R.O.U.S.: Hossien El-Nashaar says, “I was walking south of Ashbrook Independent School playground, here in Corvallis. I saw couple of nutrias out and about for a mid-afternoon snack. Nutria is smaller than a beaver but larger than a muskrat; unlike beavers or muskrats, however, it has a round, slightly haired tail. The forelegs are small compared with its body size. A rodent that was once imported for its fur now is a nuisance." We are accepting photo submissions at osutoday@oregonstate.edu
