Oregon State student from Ukraine describes horrors of war (Live 95.5)

The international student from Kyiv, Ukraine is studying at OSU, but right now he’s horrified at what’s happening to his home nation every day.
 

Is seaweed the new kale? This Oregon company hopes so (Oregonian)

The company was founded by Chuck Toombs, who spent a career working in sales and marketing for manufacturing companies before becoming an instructor at Oregon State University’s College of Business. “I saw all this research that was coming out of Oregon State,” he said, “and I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to take something actively being worked on at OSU and apply it while I’m teaching marketing to the students.”
 

OSU names Pat Reser lifetime trustee (Corvallis Advocate)

Oregon State University has awarded the Lifetime Trustee award from the OSU Foundation to Patricia Valian Reser. Reser graduated from OSU in 1960 and taught in the Beaverton School District. She received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2019.

Resilience to coastal hazards is talk topic (Newport News-Times) 

The next Hatfield Science on Tap will be held Wednesday, March 16, at 6 p.m. and features Peter Ruggiero. Ruggiero is the director of The Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub (Cascadia CoPes Hub) and a professor in Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.

NEW! Beyond Benefits: Supporting Others Through End of Life. This session will take a holistic look at end-of-life issues, including navigating care needs (including hospice and palliative care), what to expect during the dying process and how to cope with the emotions that arise. UPDATED! COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Student Experience Center and Cascade Hall 120: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.. During Spring Break, testing takes place Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Cascades Hall 120. Spring term testing moves to outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Cascade  Hall 120, Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Closed Spring Break.

NCORE 2022 Scholarship and Activities: The National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) will be held in Portland, May 31-June 4. The Office of Institutional Diversity is sponsoring various efforts for this conference, including an employee conference registration scholarship, group registration discount, a conference reception for OSU employees and friends, and information about OSU-led workshops. Students wanted to travel to DC: Join fellow Beavs in an ASOSU sponsored trip to Washington D.C. to meet with federal lawmakers and lobby for the needs of OSU students. The trip is expense-free and will occur May 9-14. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience, network with federal lawmakers as well as D.C.-based OSU alumni, and represent the ASOSU as an ambassador of the student population. Art-Sci Fellowship faculty mentors: We are looking for scientists, artists, writers and musicians who are willing to serve as faculty mentors for this year-long student experience. Students selected will develop a creative project informed by active engagement in lab or field research. If you are interested in becoming a mentor contact Jerri Bartholomew by March 15.

Booster clinic: The Beaver Booster Clinic takes place in the SEC Plaza through March 18. All COVID-19 vaccines available, including doses for children. No insurance, ID or appointment required but bring your CDC vaccine card if you have one.

Traffic and Maintenance 

Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation, the Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot (lot #3221) will be closed for paving and ground floor entries to the building will be inaccessible starting March 10. 

Power outages for multiple buildings March 22: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a series of planned power outages are scheduled. The planned power outages will impact multiple buildings located along or near SW Jefferson Way in the Community Hall Slope Project work area. Planned outages are scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Buildings include: Callahan Hall, Cauthorn Hall, Hawley Hall, Heckart Lodge, Kerr Administration Building, McAlexander Field House, McNary Dining Hall, McNary Hall, Poling Hall, Reed Lodge, Snell Hall, Weatherford Hall and Wilson Hall.

Graf parking lot: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation, the Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot (lot #3221) will be closed for paving and ground floor entries to the building will be inaccessible. Excavation and forming for the concrete work will start on March 7 and will continue through the paving of the lot starting March 14. The lot and ground floor entries will not be closed during this work (March 7-11) but use caution and watch for workers and equipment in the parking lot during this time.
