COVID: Why are rapid tests banned in China? (DW)

The emergence of the omicron variant has also posed new challenges to the accuracy of RATs. According to Chunhuei Chi, director of the Center for Global Health at Oregon State University in the United States, some recent studies suggest that because the omicron variant may be concentrated more around patients' throats or mouths in the beginning, when they try to take samples from their noses using RATs, the sensitivity of the tests may be lower.

Rethinking higher education: E-campus, no degree (KOIN)

Jon Boeckenstedt, the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at Oregon State, said they’re getting with the times and bolstering their e-campus. “Most of the students who are housed at and live on our Corvallis campus will have taken e-campus classes, so they were very comfortable with the format,” he told KOIN 6 News. “Going to online learning wasn’t something new and different to them so we made that switch, that slide, to complete online learning pretty easily.” The future of e-learning, he said, is unlimited. People who are place-bound can access schooling in a way they never have before. The pandemic taught us there are no limits to how we can adjust.

So we asked, how we could help students feel connected to their peers?”

U.S. Department of Energy awards $25M for wave energy testing at first-in-nation Oregon facility (OPB)

Just south of Newport, a new wave energy facility called PacWave is about a year away from being operational. It will be the first commercial-scale, grid-connected wave energy test site in the U.S. and one of few in the world. Seven miles offshore, the Oregon State University facility won’t be visible from the beach. In fact, it won’t impact beach-goers at all.
