Members of a search committee have been named to help Oregon State University’s Board of Trustees select the university’s next president.
 

Build Back Better Act would provide 'historic commitment" to wildfire mitigation funding (Jefferson Public Radio)

The signatories, mostly from Western states impacted by wildfires, included Chris Adlam, a regional fire specialist with Oregon State University extension in southwest Oregon. He says the bill’s funding would improve ecological integrity of forests while reducing wildfire risks.

 

Fonseca receives 2021 National Diversity Regional Excellence in Extension Award (LIFE@OSU)

Ana Lu Fonseca, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) state specialist for the Division of University Outreach and Engagement, has received a 2021 National Diversity Regional Excellence in Extension Award.
 

Environment Commission issues historic mandate for cleaner trucks on Oregon roads (Salem Reporter)

The Environmental Quality Commission is a governor-appointed panel of five people that make decisions for the state’s Department of Environmental Quality, which will enforce the rules. Current members are Kathleen George of the Grande Ronde Tribe, Sam Baraso, manager of Portland’s Clean Energy Fund, and Molly Kile, a professor at Oregon State University.

NEW! Timely Teaching Tips: Looking for ways to boost student engagement and success? Motivation can be challenging for students late in the term. Anika Lautenbach, coordinator of the Academic Coaching & Strategist Programs at the Academic Success Center, provides specific strategies for conversations with students about motivation as well as motivation tools you can share directly with students.

Navy vs. Army Football Game: Every year, OSU Naval ROTC and Army ROTC play in a fun, end-of-fall-term flag (mostly) football game, in light of the real USNA/USMA football game in December. University Budget Committee: The Committee will meet this Friday, Nov. 19 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The committee will discuss projections and planning relevant to developing budget and tuition recommendations for 2022-23. If you are interested in joining as an observer, register for the webinar here.

SFC Fee Deliberations: PA & SEE. The Student Fee Committee (SFC) is currently deliberating over the budget proposals received from the eight fee-funded units. Drop by MU 109 (or join through Zoom) to provide valuable feedback about Performing Arts and Student Experiences and Engagement (SEE) as the SFC discusses their budget request on Nov. 19, 3-6 p.m. This will determine how much students pay for incidental fee next year and what services they have access to.

Compassion in Action: Part of a national movement of students working to create a more just and compassionate world through the power of meditation, community building and social change. Global Health Seminar: In the final lecture this term in the Center for Global Health’s 2021-22 seminar series, Erin Pung will present “Navigating Endemic COVID-19: The Singapore experience.” Pung is the deputy director of communicable disease at the Health Promotion Board in Singapore, responsible for the national immunization program. MLK awards open: Nominations are open for the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Awards, honoring OSU community members who exemplify qualities of service and selflessness. This year, nominations will be accepted for four awards: The Phyllis S. Lee Award, the Frances Dancy Hooks Award, the Oscar Humberto Montemayor Award and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alumni Legacy Award. Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the winter 2022 Career Champions program are now being accepted. The program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Clothing in Disaster. Essential clothing for a disaster supply is a commonly overlooked area of preparedness. If a person does not have the proper clothing suitable for the terrain they are in, then harsh elements such as rain, cold and snow can have catastrophic effects. Follow these guidelines when choosing your emergency clothing. COVID testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology, is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to obtain a test at one of these locations: Corvallis: The LaSells Stewart Center: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Student Experience Center: Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Testing will cease on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. Dec. 9-10, only the SEC location will be open. During Winter Break, only the SEC location will be open, and its hours will be limited to Tuesdays and Wednesdays only from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Only WVT will provide testing over the break for travel purposes. Student Health Services will not be providing testing for travel purposes. (For staff wanting to get a test voluntarily, please make sure to have registered for a lab dash account prior to coming to test in order to save time: https://labdash.net/.) Bend: Ray Hall 302, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-6 p.m.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Reser Stadium lot: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, the west area of the Reser Stadium lot (lot #3281) will be closed from Nov. 22 through Dec. 10. Exterior saw-cutting work is scheduled for an electrical reroute. An extended closure for the west area of the Reser Stadium lot is also scheduled starting Nov. 22 through June 15, 2023. The area will be used for a contractor job site and temporary storage space (view map).

Leaf pickup: Starting Nov. 22, more than 20 parking lots and the OSU parking garage will be closed for sweeping and leaf pickup. Parking lots will reopen as the work is completed, and all lots are expected to be reopened by the end of the business day on Nov. 24. Furman Hall: As part of the Community Hall Slope Project, excavation and storm pipe installation work is scheduled along the south side of Furman Hall starting Thursday, Nov. 18 through Nov. 24. A sidewalk closure will be in place. Pedestrians will be able to access Furman Hall via the east entrance (view map).
