TRACE OSU testing: TRACE OSU is providing random COVID-19 testing by invitation at its Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Testing will take place in Corvallis in the Memorial Union Ballroom and at Reser ticket booths, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. In Newport, testing will be provided every other week beginning Jan. 19, Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. At OSU-Cascades, testing is provided only to students living and working on campus, and employees working on campus. In spring 2020, Regan A. R. Gurung, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Oregon State University, conducted research on the determinants of student success in remote learning (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology, in press). One of the biggest indicators of academic success was the match between what students expected and what they experienced in class. So, he sent his students an email at the start of the fall semester to manage expectations: Online learning would present challenges, but he’d be there to help.
A Bend whiskey-maker is welcoming a new study co-authored by an Oregon State University researcher that found flavor differences in whiskey are influenced by the environment in which the barley used to make it is grown.
Postcards to Campus is an ongoing project centered around the OSU community. This project is open for submissions of mailed, dropped off or uploaded postcards. OSU community members are encouraged to share art, writings and sentiments on their postcards that range from personal to OSU-specific. Postcards submitted will be on display in the Valley Library rotunda and online, and will be archived through OSU's Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC) to be featured in their COVID Collecting Project. Tuition Forum: The University Budget Committee has begun meeting to discuss recommendations for tuition rates for the 2021-22 academic year. As part of developing recommendations for the Board of Trustees, representatives of the Budget Committee and the Office of Budget and Resource Planning are offering a series of weekly forums to discuss the tuition setting process, tuition rate scenarios for FY22, and to answer any questions about tuition and the university budget. COVID town hall: There is great interest in many COVID-19 matters, including the status of planning for fall term, spring break travel, vaccinations, testing within the university community and other pandemic-related topics. An OSU town hall event will be held Thursday, March 4, from 10-11 a.m., where updates and information about these and other COVID-19 topics will be shared. University Budget Conversation: The Office of Budget and Resource Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation Thursday, March 4 from noon to 1 p.m., via Zoom. This week’s topic is Fees and Differential Tuition. The Budget Conversation sessions are limited to 60 minutes with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. CIRC Webinar on Climate Change and Future Flooding in the Pacific Northwest: A new study finds increases in flood size throughout the Columbia River Basin and longer flood seasons for select watersheds by the end of the century. Distinguished professors: OSU’s 2021 University Distinguished Professors will deliver Zoom lectures on their scholarship. Richard Settersten, University Distinguished Professor of Human Development will give a lecture on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. (register here) and Julia Jones, University Distinguished Professor of Geography will give a lecture on May 6 at 5:30 p.m. (register here). The title of University Distinguished Professor is awarded to current OSU faculty members who have achieved national and international distinction for their contributions in research and creative work, teaching and mentoring, public engagement, and service. Professors Jones and Settersten are outstanding examples of OSU’s highest academic honor.
$15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Proposals can include expenses for activities related to customer discovery, prototyping, student time, research, commercialization plan development and more. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span 9 months or less, beginning in April 2021. Proposals are due before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 5. Animal Interludes: Spring Creek Project has released three new videos in its Animal Interludes series: Common Loon, Passenger Pigeon and Bald Eagle. The Animal Interludes are a series of 20 tiny concerts, each an original composition of words and music in honor of a threatened or beloved animal. They are part of the series Music to Save Earth's Songs, inspired by Kathleen Dean Moore's new book Earth's Wild Music.

Bike counter equipment installed along SW Campus Way bike path. Bike counter equipment has been placed on a utility pole on the north side of SW Campus Way (view map). The counter equipment will be in place from Wednesday, Feb. 24 through mid-March 2021. Tubes are marked with signage and traffic barrels.
Fire lane closure between Kerr, Valley Library and Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center on March 3: As part of the Gymnastics Practice Facility project, the fire lane located between Kerr Administration Building, the Valley Library and the Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center is scheduled to be closed on Wednesday, March 3, from 7-11 a.m. The Joy Selig statue is being removed from its current location and relocated. Motor Pool Canopy Construction Project work: As part of the Motor Pool Canopy Construction Project, a new canopy is being built at the fuel island north of the Motor Pool Building. Fencing will go up around the area, and work will start on Tuesday, March 2 and continue through Friday, April 2 (view map). Staging will occur in the parking lot west of the Motor Pool Building.
