Oregon State University estimates a potential revenue shortfall as high as $100 million, according to vice president of university relations and marketing Steve Clark. The University of Oregon predicts big losses if on-campus student activities are severely curtailed.

OSU, UW receive another $5 million to advance nanotech innovation (KTVZ)

The National Science Foundation has awarded an additional $5 million to Oregon State University and the University of Washington to continue leading a nanotechnology research partnership that’s already enabled breakthroughs in areas such as glucose monitoring for diabetics, better solar cells, improved battery electrodes and more energy-efficient fiber optic networks.

Oregon State Police are still under contract at Oregon State University until December 31st of this year. A new law enforcement entity will take over the first of the year, though.

In a new book based on nearly 30 years of study, Oregon State University researcher Steven M. Ortiz delves into the marital realities facing women married to professional athletes, including infidelity, sexism and a significant power imbalance in their relationships.

A study led by Oregon State University found that firefighters might be exposed to more harmful chemicals than previously thought while on-duty as compared to off-duty. 
 

West Nile virus found in mosquito pools in Jackson Co for the first time in five years (KTVL)

The Jackson County Vector Control District said in a press release that the positive mosquito pools were confirmed by the Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Corvallis.

100-Day Projects: A 100-day project plan is one approach to creating the future you want. It's more attainable than year-long goals, and also supports your annual goals or longer-term aspirations. It's short enough for tangible progress, while also building momentum on other efforts. It's a strategy to deal with those reoccurring problems and issues as well as develop your creative ideas and make them happen. This program will take you through the process and steps of developing 100-day projects and encourage you to do so with an accountability partner. Virtual Corvallis Sustainability Town Hall: Originally scheduled for March, you can still register for the 2020 Sustainability Town Hall. The OSU Sustainability Office hosts this event each year. This year we host in the virtual space Wednesday, Aug. 26 from noon to 1:15 p.m., via Zoom. Speakers include Kristin Eberhard, director of Climate Change and Democracy at Sightline Institute, and OSU’s own Johannah Hamilton, Ph.D. student in Public Policy. Space is limited so register today.

Request for Proposals: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking proposals that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Proposals can include expenses for activities related to customer discovery, prototyping, student time, research, commercialization plan development and more. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span 9 months or less, beginning in October 2020. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Demolition of Naval ROTC Armory: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, work related to the demolition of the Quonset Hut that served as the previous home of the Naval ROTC Armory is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 and continue through Thursday, Sept. 17. Abatement is already completed (view map).

Sidewalk closure: As part of the Buxton Hall Roof Replacement Project, the sidewalk on the south side of SW Jefferson Way from SW Weatherford Place to SW Sackett Place will be closed to support dumpster placement (view map). The closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Aug. 14 and continue through Friday, Sept. 4. Intramural Lane: Due to work related to the Cauthorn Hall fire suppression installation, SW Intramural Lane will be closed between SW Weatherford Place and SW 30th Street (view map). The closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Aug. 14 and continue through Saturday, Aug. 29. Summer paving: As part of the summer 2020 parking lot paving schedule, parking lot closures for asphalt renewal are planned for the following parking lots: #3278 (Sports Complex East), #3205 (Adams Northeast) and #3313 (Bates North). The lots will be fully or partially closed for construction and planned closure durations are subject to change as construction proceeds. Work for lot #3313 (Bates North) started on Thursday, July 23, and continues through Monday, Aug. 24. Work for lot #3205 (Adams Northeast) started on Friday, Aug. 7, and continues through Tuesday, Sept. 1. Work for lot #3278 (Sports Complex East) started on Friday, Aug. 7, and continues through Wednesday, Sept. 2. Irish Bend Covered Bridge Rehabilitation: Construction is scheduled to begin on the Irish Bend Covered Bridge along Southwest Campus Way on July 6, lasting until September. The bridge rehabilitation includes installing a fire suppression system, repainting and repairs to the wood structure. The covered bridge and Campus Way Path will be closed; Campus Way will remain open.

Postponed: Annual Steam Shutdown-Campus Wide: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The decision has been made to postpone the annual steam shut down until August in order to stay within the guidelines from the governor, university, state and CDC’s orders. The steam shutdown for 2020 will occur from Aug. 24 at 11 p.m. to Aug. 27 at 8 a.m. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you all for your understanding.
