COVID-19 website: To facilitate the ongoing sharing of information about the virus, Oregon State University has added a link on the OSU homepage to a page that provides detailed and up-to-date COVID-19 information; links to OSU, local, state and federal resources; and updates on the latest federal travel restrictions.
TRACE OSU testing: TRACE OSU is providing random COVID-19 testing by invitation at its Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. TRACE testing will end this week at all locations after Thursday, June 11. Testing takes place in Corvallis in the Memorial Union Ballroom and at Reser ticket booths, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. In Newport, testing will be provided every other week, Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. At OSU-Cascades, testing is provided only to students living and working on campus, and employees working on campus. Testing takes place Mondays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Tuesdays, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Visit the OSU-Cascades Safety and Success website to learn more about testing schedules. COVID-19 vaccine clinics: Weekly clinics at Reser Stadium in Corvallis are being collaboratively run by Samaritan Health Services, Benton County and OSU. These clinics will end June 10. Visit this website to schedule a vaccine. OSU-Cascades students, faculty and staff can learn where to find vaccines in Central Oregon here. An Oregon State University report shows that even before the pandemic, all Oregon counties were considered “child-care deserts,” meaning they lacked adequate child care for infants and toddlers. And in many counties, parents of preschool-aged children also lacked childcare options. Megan Pratt is an assistant professor of practice in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University and the lead author of the report.
Prof Chunhuei Chi, the director of Oregon State University’s centre for global health, says: “Initially the government was caught off guard, not just by the outbreak itself but the scale, so they are scrambling to mobilise all resources to contain the outbreak, including hospitals and testing facilities.
Oregon State University said Tuesday it has been selected to host a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration institute focused on collaborative study of the rapidly changing ocean and expanded demands on its use.
“At the population level, what’s interesting is that we are seeing a lot of changes in the environment that have to do, in this particular case, with the opening up of the Arctic Ocean due to climate,” says Daniel Palacios at Oregon State University. “It goes beyond this one animal to potentially many animals doing the same thing.”
Oregon State University announced Tuesday it will build a new $20 million dairy processing facility using private investments and university funding.
“Drumming is used by woodpeckers for the same reason songbirds use their song: to communicate to potential mates (females) and to signal the location of their territory to potential rivals (males),” Oregon State University Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology Jim Rivers said. “I have a Northern Flicker in my backyard that routinely drums on my neighbors’ stovepipe each spring and the sound carries quite far.”
Two dozen of those pictures grace Brown’s new memoir, This is Not For You: An Activist’s Journey of Resistance and Resilience, by Brown and Brian Benson (Oregon State University Press). The story details how art and activism have intertwined throughout Brown’s long and eventful life. Richard Brown’s portraits of the Black community in Managua, Nicaragua have hung in the Portland Art Museum. His collection of Portland’s Black youth is on permanent display at the Avel Gordly Albina Early Head Start Center.
Vulnerable populations are still at risk when it comes to SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – despite nearly 66% of Oregon adults being partially vaccinated. The elderly, immune-compromised, and children under 12 should be aware that the virus is mutating and becoming a greater threat, according to Brett Tyler, Oregon State University Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing Director. Tyler also serves as a co-principal investigator of OSU’s Team-based Rapid Assessment of Community-level coronavirus Epidemics (TRACE) Project.
Greenhouse: Lea Clayton, accountant with the School of Chemical, Biological & Environmental Engineering, says, “I start most of my own seeds in the greenhouse. I have vegetables, herbs, hops, grapes, flowers, berries, fruit and filbert trees – which aren’t in the photo. I preserve most of what I harvest and the garden provides food for us throughout the year.”

Call for proposals: Affiliate Faculty Research Incubator Program. Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium has released our 2021 Affiliate Faculty Research Incubator Program call for proposals. AFRIP is designed to recruit faculty to become involved with OSGC and provide resources needed to develop student experiences in STEM disciplines. Projects should support NASA Mission Directorates and align with NASA’s top research priorities and areas of emphasis. Proposals are accepted monthly and due the final day of each month. Grant funding for open educational resources now open: Open Oregon Educational Resources, a statewide organization that promotes the use of OER, seeks grant proposals that implement high-impact, culturally relevant/inclusive, collaborative projects in support of open education and reduced textbook costs in lower-division courses. Grant applications are due July 9. Project timelines may vary, but all projects must be completed by June 1, 2023. Learn more and apply today.
Professional development for open educational resources: Want to make your course materials relevant and accessible for all students? Do you wish your course materials incorporated and supported the experiences of your actual students? Join a statewide Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort. You can earn a $200 stipend upon completion of “Part 1: Explore,” and you’ll have the option to earn an additional $300 stipend in “Part 2: Implement.” Register online by June 14.
Scheduled: Annual Steam Shutdown Campus-Wide. Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus to complete maintenance services at the plant throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating and all equipment that uses steam, campus-wide.
