Caltrans, the agency responsible for more than 50,000 miles of highways and freeways in California, has approved the use of low-carbon cement following testing by the Oregon State University College of Engineering.

A study by Oregon State University researchers found that nurses who work the night shift are more likely to suffer from physical and psychological health symptoms like severe nightmares, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and inflammation.
A vaccine clinic is being held daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis through Friday, Feb. 11. All brands of authorized COVID-19 vaccine, including Pfizer for 5-11 year olds, are available. This event is open to anyone 5 years or older, and no appointment is needed. Oregon State University will no longer require proof of vaccination for designated outdoor events, as being outdoors reduces the rate of COVID-19 transmission, OSU announced Tuesday, Feb. 8. The change is effective immediately.
The state’s higher education institutions are starting to look at adjusting mask policies, as well. Oregon State University officials shared a message with the school community on Tuesday that they’re evaluating the use of masks within classrooms and elsewhere.
Merryfield barrel: This oak barrel filled with concrete, built in the foundation of Merryfield Hall, was uncovered during the recent Merryfield Hall renovation. Joe Majeski, director of facilities services, posits that this could be an early version of a Sonotube, which are concrete tubes used to create structural columns. Merryfield Hall build in 1908-9 and was John Bennes’ first construction project at Oregon State University. Bennes went on to build and/or remodel 35 more projects on the OSU Corvallis Campus. OSU Album Club: "The Harder They Come." Turn up your speakers, get comfy at home and join Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts/Rock Historian Bob Santelli as we listen to and discuss "The Harder They Come," a 1972 soundtrack to the film of the same name, featuring music by Jimmy Cliff. In 2021 the Library of Congress deemed the album "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Apply for an Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant through March 29. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. The 34th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. Keith Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Community Hall Slope Project area updates: The west side of the Pharmacy building will be open starting Monday, Feb. 7. The area between the Pharmacy building, Joyce Collin Furman Hall and Gladys Valley will be closed to all access with the exception of the ADA entrance to the Pharmacy building. The ADA entrance to Joyce Collin Furman Hall will be from the east. Due to the extent of the construction, the exact ADA pathway to the Pharmacy building will vary (view map). These access updates will be in place through Thursday, Sept. 1.
