There are infinitely many real quadratic equations that, when iterated from zero, are known to end up producing a repeating cycle of numbers. But if you restrict c to rational values — those that can be written as fractions — only three values eventually generate periodic sequences: 0, –1 and –2. “These dynamical systems are very, very special,” said Clayton Petsche of Oregon State University.
A collaboration among scientists from Oregon State University, the Hoopa Valley Tribe, Penn State and Cal Poly Humboldt has shed light new on the cat-like animal known for its large eyes and fluffy, striped tail. The study is published in the journal Northwest Science. (see also Think Out Loud)
Bargaining teams representing Oregon’s seven public universities and Service Employees International Union Local 503, which represents classified employees working at the state’s universities, reached a tentative agreement in contract negotiations early Tuesday morning, days after the union declared an impasse in talks.
The glove swab method was developed by Sarah Lowder when she was a graduate student at Oregon State University. Now an extension viticulture specialist at the University of Georgia, Lowder told Good Fruit Grower that the “glove swabs” do not actually require gloves. You can run your bare hand through a vineyard, too, with no significant difference in results.
Chris Daly of Oregon State University leads the Prism Climate Group, which helps create the map. He says in the updated version, about half the country shifted a half-zone warmer.

$15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Tucker named academic director for DSI: Julie Tucker has been named academic director for the Design for Social Impact program. She served as interim academic director since October. Tucker joined Oregon State in 2013 and was promoted to full professor in 2023. She will maintain a part-time appointment as professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. The DSI program brings together faculty from multiple disciplines and is focused on the creation and delivery of experiential curricular and co-curricular education centered on design, innovation and social impact.
Seeking Solutions Faculty Fellow Positions in the Center for Teaching and Learning: The Center for Teaching and Learning is seeking applications for Faculty Fellows for the 2024-25 academic year to design and facilitate a Seeking Solutions teacher training program, coordinate and support team teaching of Seeking Solutions courses, and consult with faculty on best practices for meeting the learning outcomes and criteria of the Seeking Solutions category in their courses. Symposium: The 2024 Research Advances in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Ecology Symposium (RAFWAE) will take place on April 12 in Peavy Hall. Graduate and undergraduate students who conduct research in the fields of fisheries, wildlife and ecology at OSU or other universities are invited to present their work at this conference, at any stage of development: proposal, data collection, preliminary results, published in Science, or research-adjacent talks about outreach, art or other topics. Deadline for abstract submission is March 15.

Taste Sensitivity Study: We are looking for participants for a research study examining how hunger state influences taste sensitivities to carbohydrates. Participants must be healthy, non-diabetic non-smokers ages 18-45. The study will involve performing taste sensitivity tests before and after eating a provided meal.
