Oregon State University study examines academic impact of 4-day school week (KGW)

Paul Thompson, an associate professor of economics at Oregon State University, said before the pandemic, 137 schools in Oregon had opted for a shorter week. He said the study looked at the standardized math test scores of more than 340,000 high school students between 2010 and 2019 who had similar levels of achievement and attended similar schools.
 

OSU opens center for Black & Indigenous student success (KEZI)

Oregon State University held a grand opening for its newest center on Tuesday on the first day of Black History Month. Many gathered in Memorial Union Room 61 at noon to celebrate the new Griggs Center for Black & Indigenous Student Success.

What's driving the remarkable decline of urban sprawl in the US? (Anthropocene)

The findings have an intriguing implication for climate policy: “Our results highlight an important mechanism through which a tax on carbon would discourage new development, namely by reducing incentives for people to live relatively far from their place of work,” says study team member David Lewis, an economist at Oregon State University in Corvallis. “We estimate that a $0.03/gallon annual price increase lowers land development rates by about 2.84% per year.”

The case for professors emerit (Inside Higher Ed)

Oregon State University is also considering changing its professor emeritus policy. Alan Mix, distinguished professor of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences there, said he shared the idea with colleagues after reading a journal article that Freyd published about the need for gender-neutral titles for retired professors last year. Mix said this wasn’t something he’d given too much thought to prior to seeing the article, but he thought the idea seemed “reasonable.”
 

OSU to establish 15 new endowed positions (Democrat-Herald)

Oregon State University will establish 15 new endowed faculty positions distributed across seven colleges, the university announced. Donors to the university committed $13.8 million in an initiative called the Provost’s Faculty Match Program, a joint effort between the OSU Foundation and the Office of the Provost.

$15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in April 2022. Proposals are due by Feb. 28, 5 p.m. Learn more and apply.

Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars Undergrad Internships for 2022: The Summer Scholars Program is a paid, 10-week internship that places diverse undergraduate students from around the country with various Oregon-based host organizations (tribal, public agency, non-profit, non-governmental). Design Industry Connect Feb. 23: OSU students and alumni creatives are invited to come together for an evening of networking during the OSU Design Network’s Industry Connect on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. This virtual event is free to students and alumni in innovation and design management, merchandising management, apparel design, interior design and graphic design. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Reser: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, the South Reser parking lot entrance/exit to SW 26th Street will be temporarily moved to the south to allow for construction of the new wellness center (view map). Both entrance and exit will be limited to one lane with a detour in place once in the parking lot. The existing crosswalk will be closed and a new temporary crosswalk will be added across SW 26th Street.

Furman Hall: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a planned water shutdown at Joyce Collin Furman Hall is scheduled for Feb. 3 from 6 a.m.-3 p.m. (view map). Restrooms will not be usable during the planned water shutdown. For questions or comments about the planned water shutdown, contact Construction Manager Ryan Wilson at 503-779-3488.

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
