Opioid overdose risk is markedly elevated for those just released from Oregon prisons (KLCC)

People recently released from Oregon prisons have a risk for opioid overdose that is ten times greater than the general public. That’s according to a new study led by a scientist at Oregon State University.

A study examining different rates of nitrogen application for Anjou pears resulted in some very boring data, according to the lead researcher.  “This is the least exciting but also sexiest data set I have ever seen,” said Ashley Thompson, Oregon State University Extension educator, as she presented her findings to Hood River pear growers in February.

Science Pub: The surprising role that invisible single-celled microbes play in buffering climate change impacts in ocean waters will be the topic of Oregon State University's Science Pub event at 6 p.m. April 5. The free event, which can be attended in person at the Old World Deli in Corvallis or viewed online, will feature a presentation by Kimberly Halsey, the Excellence in Microbiology Faculty Scholar in the OSU College of Science. Her presentation is titled “The oceans’ single-celled gas guzzlers.” Registration is required to attend Science Pub in person or to view it online.

RHA x CAPE trivia night: April is Sexual Assault Awareness/Action Month, a time to support survivors, raise awareness and commit to action to prevent sexual violence in our campus community. Join the Residence Hall Association and the Center for Advocacy, Prevention & Education for a trivia night to kick off the month’s events from 6-8 p.m., April 5 in the MU Ballroom. NEW! Navy competition: Help cheer on the OSU Naval ROTC unit all day April 8 as they host the annual Northwest Navy competition between the NROTC units of Oregon State University, University of Idaho/Washington State, University of Washington and University of Utah. It will be held all over campus and units participate in competitions such as color guard, regulation drill, physical readiness training (PRT), weapons relay, academics, volleyball, basketball, soccer and other similar activities. Marine Science Day: Hatfield Marine Science Day is April 8, and we are back onsite at the HMSC campus in Newport. NEW! Yarn donations requested: The OSU Craft Center has a weekly crochet club for OSU students. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to find community, learn and engage in a stress-releasing craft. This club is free; the craft center provides a gifted student crochet lead to teach and provide help as well as crochet hooks. Yarn donations are currently being sought from the community. NEW! Pharmacy research program: The College of Pharmacy Summer Undergraduate Research Program is now accepting applications through May 1. Opportunities are available to participate in hands-on bench research in laboratories that seek to discover new medicines, novel and innovative means of drug delivery, new targets for drug therapy and to improve current drug therapy regime for patients. Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until May 19. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Eye tracking study participants wanted: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks research study participants who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The study purpose is to better understand driving habits while viewing videos and wearing eye tracking glasses. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which requires a time commitment of approximately 45 minutes and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. Indigenous undergrad summer internship supplemental funding application deadline April 10: The New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) program offers OSU undergrads self-identifying as Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian, supplemental funding ($3750) for summer internships in natural sciences. Internships must be at least eight weeks long and interns will meet with NBTS mentors over the summer. More info and application at https://opencampus.oregonstate.edu/nbts.

Art+Science Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of two disciplines.
