OSU develops tool to reconsider, remove racially harmful place names (KOIN)

And while changing the names of 72 well-known geographical locations is no small feat, a recent study conducted by Oregon State University has led researchers to develop a tool for analyzing and altering location titles that may be considered harmful or rooted in white supremacy. Blistering June heat, unprecedented April snow: Climate change makes extreme weather more likely in Oregon (Oregonian)

As heat-trapping gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere — coming from tailpipes, power plants and industrial facilities — these types of extreme weather events are likely to become more common, said Erica Fleishman, a professor at Oregon State University and director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute. California's reparations task force explained (Cal State)

Stacey Smith, a history professor at Oregon State University and consultant to the task force, estimated that during the Gold Rush there were at least 600 enslaved Black people living in California, based on census records.
 

Tiny micro-plastics huge environmental problem for rivers, ocean, researchers say (Ohio State Journal)

“We lack data and regulations on most of these,” said Susanne Brander, a scientist formerly at UNC Wilmington, who is now at Oregon State University. “Those chemicals don’t stay put. We can’t easily remove micro plastics from the environment.”
 

New scientists, new research directions (Good Fruit Grower)

Another new USDA hire, postharvest physiologist Rachel Leisso, also worked at several research labs in Wenatchee after she earned her doctorate at WSU, focusing on apple postharvest physiology. Now, after a stint as an assistant professor of horticulture at Montana State University, she is returning to her postharvest roots with a newly created USDA position based in Hood River, at Oregon State University’s Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center. 
 

'This bill is the product of a lot of hard work': Elliott now officially a research forest (KVAL)

Governor Kate Brown Tuesday signed a bill turning the Elliott State Forest into a research forest. The land will now be managed by Oregon State University.
 

Unique way to take charge of weed control in hazelnut crops (Growing Produce)

Marcelo Moretti, Assistant Professor at Oregon State University, conducted two studies in 2021 utilizing EWC to manage Italian ryegrass in hazelnut orchards. One study focused on the necessary speed of operation to provide effective weed management. The second, multi-year study focuses on crop safety when using EWC.

“Having an unlocked door helped prevent ‘naïve’ jays from abandoning the foraging area due to a failure to get food, thus increasing their probability of observing group mates interacting with the puzzle,” co-author Jonathon Valente of Oregon State University said.

OSU-Cascades has been given the green light to request capital for a $60 million recreation center. The Oregon State University Board of Trustees approved the request on Friday.

NEW! Hawaiian event: The 67th annual Hō‘ike (formerly known as the Lūʻau), an event that celebrates Hawaiian dance and culture, takes place April 16 at The LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus. The title of this year’s hō‘ike is “Ke Au O Ka Hula, Hula Over the Years.” It will focus on the history of hula and Hawaii. A State of Immigrants: A New Look at the Immigrant Experience in Oregon. This live remote panel talk features authors of the recently released report of the same name. NEW! Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University's Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for simulated supervisor-based environments. Participants will complete a series of tasks that require controlling and monitoring a simulated remotely-piloted vehicle and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete one two-hour session. How Has the Pandemic Impacted Your Cat? We are looking for cats and their owners to help us understand how cat behavior and human-animal bonds were impacted by the pandemic. This OSU Human-Animal Interaction Lab research study will take place on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus (Withycombe Hall) and will include two behavioral attachment tests with your cat (taking approximately 20-30 minutes). Honors College/Center for the Humanities Summer Internships: The Honors College and the Center for the Humanities invite applications from faculty and undergraduate teams for the summer 2022 Honors College-Center for the Humanities Research Internship Program. Up to seven $4,500 internships will be awarded to support Honors College undergraduates working with College of Liberal Arts faculty. Faculty mentors will receive $1,000 in salary.
