Long-term tracking of whale feeding behavior via satellite now possible with new tag (ScienMag)

Oregon State University researchers have developed a new satellite tag that allows them to better track whales’ behavior, including previously unobservable feeding events during dives.
 

Social media use linked to developing depression regardless of personality (Science Daily)

Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, the study, "Associations between social media use, personality structure, and development of depression," was co-authored by Renae Merrill, a doctoral student in the Public Policy Program at the University of Arkansas.  Merrill wrote the paper with dean of the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University, Brian Primack, and Chunhua Cao, an assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of Alabama.

Lanier named interim director of Oregon Space Grant Consortium (LIFE@OSU)

Catherine Lanier has been named interim director of Oregon Space Grant Consortium at Oregon State University.  Lanier has served as associate director for the federally funded Oregon Space Grant Consortium since 2013 and has been at Oregon State since 2002.

“I would say it is very effective for the weeds that I am targeting,” said Marcelo Moretti, an assistant professor at Oregon State University, who has been experimenting with the technology in hazelnuts for two years. “It is safe to hazelnuts the way we are using it, and it is very compatible with our production system because we want bare ground; we don’t have anything that is combustible on the ground most of the time.”

Timely Teaching Tips: Would your students benefit from a study group to stay on track throughout the term? The Academic Success Center’s Conducting Study Groups has helpful suggestions for setting up and facilitating group study. Consider helping students form groups by creating a Canvas discussion board or a class Teams channel where students can connect with others interested in joining a study group.

NEW! It’s Time to Paw-ty! Cedar, the OSU Department of Public Safety wellness dog, is turning 2 years old. Cedar’s birthday paw-ty takes place from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 10 in Cascade Hall Room 136. Cookies and refreshments will be served. A pet food and supply drive in Cedar’s honor will benefit local shelters. 4-H Open House in Benton County: The annual 4-H Open House takes place Oct. 6, 6:30 p.m., at the Benton County Fairgrounds Solar Building. Benton County 4-H serves over 3,000 youth annually through community clubs, school programs and camps. Youth who are 9-19 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2022, are eligible to join 4-H. NEW! Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Earthquakes. Experts predict that the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake will occur within our lifetime. The projected magnitude is 9.0, with shaking lasting for 5-7 minutes. The Oregon coast will also experience a tsunami (30-40 foot wave) that follows the earthquake.
