“What happened this June was startling,” Oregon’s state climatologist, Larry O’Neill, told me (Oregon State University faculty). “We’re setting more records all the time, and seeing things that we usually don’t see in places we don’t see them. It makes me very concerned that the climate projections are underestimating the degree of climate change.”
Oregon State University’s Department of Food Science and Technology has conducted sensory analysis studies, and grant money has also allowed them to increase testing and other analytical services which they’ve made available to Oregon’s wine industry. These are things that didn’t exist just one to two years ago, according to Schulte.
A ban on hunting sage grouse in central Idaho apparently resulted in greater population growth, said assistant professor Jonathan Dinkins of Oregon State University. However, Dinkins and professor Jeff Beck of the University of Wyoming say that in their examination of 22 relatively distinct populations of greater and Gunnison sage grouse, some populations went up, some went down and some held steady under hunting restrictions.
Experts at Oregon State University Extension Service say now’s the time to start coaxing poinsettias back into color and bloom for December. Sensitive to day length, the poinsettia needs a certain minimum amount of darkness each 24-hour period to stimulate blooming in the winter.
