Oregon State University Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building: It seemed like an impossible project to create a safe and sustainable ocean research facility on the wind-battered Oregon coast in the middle of a tsunami evacuation zone. The Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building stands as a testament to the many design, engineering and construction feats overcome by the project team.
Anthony Koppers, an international expert in large-scale geodynamic processes and marine geology, has been named senior advisor to Oregon State University Vice President for Research Irem Tumer. (see also Gazette-Times)
Both Oregon State University and the University of Oregon saw more than a 2% increase in enrollment. This year marked a record in total enrollment at OSU, and UO saw a record number of first-year students.
Santosh Ramesh, a junior computer science and business major, and Brooke Fessenden, a senior marketing major, have they earned the second place title at the International Collegiate Sales Case Competition (The World Cup of Sales) last weekend. The two are part of the OSU Sales Academy.
Researchers at Oregon State University recently conducted an extensive study of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in African lions. The study, published in the International Journal of Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, concluded that secondary infections are important in disease progression.
“On the heels of two years of drought, many areas of the Northwest experienced unprecedented air temperatures in late June and early July,” said researcher Chris Still of Oregon State University’s College of Forestry.
Yuji Hiratsuka, an accomplished artist and art educator, has been a part of the Oregon State University community for almost 30 years, and his artwork is currently being featured in OSU’s Memorial Union Gallery in a retrospective exhibit currently on display. The Advocate recently spoke with Hiratsuka about his MU exhibit, and about the processes involved in making his work.

Vote in musical instrument competition: Chet Udell, an an assistant professor in biological and ecological engineering, has been chosen as a world semi-finalist in the 2022 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. Udell’s instrument, the AirGlow, was one of 26 semi-finalists chosen from 16 different countries to compete in this annual event.
