Vaccine clinic underway at Benton County Fairgrounds through Feb. 11, free transportation available (LIFE@OSU)

A vaccine clinic is being held daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis through Friday, Feb. 11. All brands of authorized COVID-19 vaccine, including Pfizer for 5-11 year olds, are available. This event is open to anyone 5 years or older, and no appointment is needed. Drive-thru and walk-up options are available.
 

U.S. Dept. of Energy awards $25 million for wave energy technology testing at OSU (KTVZ)

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $25 million to eight groups for the testing of wave energy technologies at Oregon State University’s PacWave South facility off the central Oregon coast near Newport. (see also KOIN)

As the history of racial politics unfolds before our eyes, it may be useful to imagine what race relations may look like in the future. For this, we might turn to science fiction. I’ve been reading a fascinating new book by Oregon State philosophy professor, José-Antonio Orosco, about social justice as imagined by “Star Trek.” “Star Trek” was groundbreaking in its time for how it dealt with race. Orosco uses the show as a launching pad for reflection on contemporary racial issues.

NEW! OSU Album Club: "The Harder They Come." Turn up your speakers, get comfy at home and join Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts/Rock Historian Bob Santelli as we listen to and discuss "The Harder They Come," a 1972 soundtrack to the film of the same name, featuring music by Jimmy Cliff. In 2021 the Library of Congress deemed the album "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry. University Theatre: Ellis Island, a new play by OSU Theatre student Leah Kahn will run in the Withycombe Hall Lab Theatre, Feb. 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. In appreciation of being back in front of a live audience, tickets for all University Theatre productions are complimentary this term and can be reserved. Principles of Vineyard Management Course: Patty Skinkis, professor and Viticulture Extension Specialist in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University is offering a course to the industry and public who wish to learn about wine grape growing. NEW! Apply for an Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant through March 29. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. The 34th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. Keith Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Submission details can be found here. Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Provost will announce the winner in May 2022.

Traffic and Maintenance

Community Hall Slope Project area updates: The west side of the Pharmacy building will be open starting Monday, Feb. 7. The area between the Pharmacy building, Joyce Collin Furman Hall and Gladys Valley will be closed to all access with the exception of the ADA entrance to the Pharmacy building. The ADA entrance to Joyce Collin Furman Hall will be from the east. Due to the extent of the construction, the exact ADA pathway to the Pharmacy building will vary (view map). These access updates will be in place through Thursday, Sept. 1.
