Researchers — and their drones — touch down in Boulder County to study the extent of the Marshall fire damage (CPR News)

Wham and his research partner Erica Fischer, an assistant professor at Oregon State University, are trying to gather data in a respectful way that ultimately benefits the communities affected by the fire. They coordinated with other groups looking for similar data, including Purdue University and Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance, a volunteer organization sponsored by the National Science Foundation. 
 

OSU paused, now restarts student housing project (Democrat-Herald)

Oregon State University's plans to build upper division student housing — although somewhat narrowed — will resume after the project was put on hold in fall 2020 for pandemic-related financial considerations.
 

U.S. Forest Service to resume prescribed burning (Corvallis Advocate)

The federal plan explains that acres that once held 40 to 60 trees now hold hundreds. James Johnston is an Oregon State University fire ecologist who believes that forests need prescribed burning to reduce the fuel that builds up over years.

Beavers SAVE Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention. Learn how to reach out and help a friend. We can all help prevent suicide. Griggs Center grand opening: A grand opening celebration of the new Griggs Center for Black & Indigenous Student Success will take place Feb. 1, noon to 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 61. The grand opening of the center will introduce students to the services the office provides, as well as highlighting an honor roll of Black and Indigenous students who excelled academically this fall. Exhibition: "Celebrate Oregon's Diversity" takes the opportunity to celebrate Oregon's diversity through its culture and landscape. FYI Friday – Consumer Taste Tests: This talk will cover the reasons food companies use the Center for Sensory & Consumer Behavior Research to answer their questions; the different types of testing, sample preparation and test design to minimize bias; and how the local community is intricately involved. NEW! $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in April 2022. Proposals are due by Feb. 28, 5 p.m. Learn more and apply.

Traffic and Maintenance

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
