Today in the News Media
Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media.
Irem Tumer will step in as interim vice president for research at Oregon State University, the university announced on Wednesday.
The book will be distributed by Oregon State University Press. Willingham read through EO records, dug through documents at the Oregon Historical Society and researched secondary sources. He studied the company’s two daily papers, handful of weeklies and 20 years of online editions.
I could leave you here in awe at the scientific prowess of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and their “new” discoveries concerning Egyptian blue, but that would be doing a great disservice to chemist Mas Subramanian of Oregon State University (OSU) who last year announced in a press release that he had discovered “YInMn blue.” He even went so far as to say that his new blue color “could be used in the blue roofing movement;” exactly the application that it is being announced today by Berkley Labs.
“This is a really unusual habitat type,” says Luke Painter, an ecologist at Oregon State University in Corvallis who was not involved with the research. “A lot of animals depend on it.”
“The restoration efforts are likely to have noteworthy benefits that increase the resilience of the ecosystem in the face of climate change, but these benefits have not yet been adequately studied or quantified,” said Bill Boggess, professor of applied economics at Oregon State University and chairman of the committee that wrote the report, in a news release. “With seven large projects to be constructed and three more nearing the end of their planning process, this is the opportune time for a midcourse assessment.”
“Just like us, they’re coming inside to get warm,” said Brooke Edmunds, a horticulturist for Oregon State University Extension Service. “They’re not feeding on homes or humans, they’re just looking for cracks or crevices. Most are minding their own business. They aren’t aggressive toward people, not even the spiders.”
In "How Big is Infinity?," Oregon State University math fanatic Sarah Hagen will discuss Cantor’s method of comparing infinities and prove all sorts of crazy facts about infinite sets. No math background is required.
