The summer of 2021 included very high temperatures in the Pacific Northwest, according to Phys.org. A condition called “foliage scorch” was seen, where leaves turned brown earlier than expected, according to professor Chris Still of the Forest Ecosystems & Society Department at Oregon State University.
Jensen, professor emeritus in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, will focus his presentation on the 70th-anniversary edition of the “Trees to Know” series.
Oregon State University Extension’s Christmas tree specialist will talk about what it takes to grow a quality Christmas tree at OSU’s Science Pub on Nov. 8.
Dominick DellaSala, forest ecologist and chief scientist at Oregon-based NGO Wild Heritage, and Beverly Law, a forest ecosystem expert at Oregon State University, are among scores of scientists pressing the Biden administration to dramatically expand protections of federal lands, making carbon-dense mature and old-growth forests off-limits to roads, logging and extraction.
Tenure does protect faculty members’ right to speak up on matters of their expertise. This includes speaking as expert witnesses. Many universities have specific language for this. For instance, Oregon State University has a policy that states faculty can serve as expert witnesses in administrative or judicial proceedings in which the Oregon State Board of Higher Education and Oregon State University are not parties, as long as they do so “in a manner consistent with the OSU Policy on Outside Professional Activities, and consistent with any college, unit, or department restrictions on outside consulting or conflict of interest policies.”

Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Preparedness Kits. Preparedness kits help bridge the emergency or disaster until normalcy can be restored. Kit recommendations range from 24 hours to 14 days, from personal to vehicle to workplace and household sizes. UPDATED! $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking applications that describe technology-based projects that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Proposals can include expenses for activities related to customer discovery, prototyping, student time, research, commercialization plan development and more. Each project should span nine months or less, beginning in January 2022. Proposals due by 5 p.m. Nov. 30.

Apply for an Affordable Learning Grant by Nov. 30: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant. The ALG provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook.
