Researchers at Portland State University and Oregon State University looking at the aftermath of wildfires in southwestern Oregon and northern California found that after 20 years, even in severely burned areas, Douglas fir grew back on its own without the need for salvage logging and replanting.

Budget conversation: On Thursday, Nov. 1 at noon, the Office of Budget & Fiscal Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation in the Memorial Union, Room 215. This week’s topic is “Tuition and the Tuition Setting Process.” The Budget Conversations sessions are limited to 60 minutes and are an open forum structure with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. Ettihad Cultural Night: The Ettihad Cultural Night will take place on Nov. 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Native American Longhouse. At the event, different organizations, as well as those represented by the ECC region (Northern Africa, Central Asia, Southwest Asia), will be able to discuss their cultural groups and have different activities available. Steinway series: Pianist Lukáš Vondráček will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 at Oregon State University as part of the Corvallis-OSU Piano International Steinway Piano Series. The concert will be held in Austin Auditorium at the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th Street, Corvallis. Tickets are $25 in advance or $28 at the door. New art exhibit: The Fairbanks Gallery of Art in Fairbanks Hall features the work of Natalie Krick, Nov. 5-28. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month for the Corvallis Arts Walk. Admission is free.

OSU Centers and Institutes/Core Research Facilities Fair: Drop by the Memorial Union Horizon Room on Friday, Nov. 16, between 3 and 6 p.m. Twenty-nine centers, institutes and research facilities from across campus will be staffing tables to provide information. The goal of the event is to increase awareness, usage and collaborations through our centers, institutes and facilities, and is a great opportunity to meet researchers. Attendance to the event is open to all faculty, staff, students and industry to learn about the research, available services, equipment and instrumentation. NEW! First Meal: A Talk by Artist and Professor Julie Green: Julie Green will discuss her new series of paintings that illustrate exonerees’ first meals on the outside after release from prison. With “First Meal,” developed in collaboration with the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, Green hopes to spark conversations about the uses, abuses and inequities of our criminal justice system. Training Days: OSU Training Days is now open for registration. NASA student symposium: Oregon NASA Space Grant will host the 2018 Student Symposium, Thursday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at The LaSells Stewart Center. Master Recycler class: Act soon to secure your spot. Recycle Right: What To Do with Cardboard: With recent changes in recycling, it’s more important than ever to recycle right. At OSU, cardboard is collected in designated outdoor containers due to its size, fire code, and pest management. This refers to material that is corrugated (contains multiple, wavy layers), whereas paperboard (such as a cereal box) can go in a standard “paper” recycling bin. Flatten and remove all packaging.
