Five years ago, computer scientist Alan Fern and his colleagues at Oregon State University, in Corvallis, set out to answer one of the most pressing questions in artificial intelligence (AI): Could they understand how AI reasons, makes decisions, and chooses its actions?
Researchers at Oregon State University and Baylor University say they have made a breakthrough toward reducing the energy consumption of the photonic chips used in data centers and supercomputers. (see also KEZI)
It’s an honor for a researcher to have a species named after them, said Brian Sidlauskas, an ichthyologist at Oregon State University. (He would know: There’s an Amazonian fish with his name on it.) But while he’s not interested in barring their use, he does think the ICZN could create a process for ditching problematic names — perhaps through a panel of experts tasked with weighing in on proposed name changes.
Lopez-Reyes, Oregon State University Extension Service Open Campus and Juntos student success coordinator, has been growing his home garden for five years. It’s full of peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, epazote and cilantro. He grows so many pepper plants that they often overflow into pots. All of his bounty goes into meals he cooks with culturally important foods.
After collecting a beetle at the ranch that didn’t resemble any species he was familiar with, Will called up Bembidion expert David Maddison, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State University, to help identify the specimen. Together, the scientists used morphological and DNA analysis to confirm that the beetle represented a completely new species.

SRS Listen and learn: UIT-Academic Technologies will host a virtual session featuring a number of faculty who use Top Hat (OSU’s centrally supported Student Response System) in their teaching from noon to 1:15 p.m., May 25. Join us to learn how they leverage the tool in their classrooms, their observations on student learning and their insights on the gaps they see in their teaching needs and what the technology can currently offer. Language in Learning: Visiting Fulbright Scholar Derek Fish is giving a presentation about the language of learning at 4 p.m., May 25 in Weniger 328. Make a solar filter and learn how to photograph the sun: In preparation for the annular solar eclipse that will take place on Oct. 14, faculty members Randall Milstein (physics) and Julia Bradshaw (photography) together with Tom Carrico (astrophotographer and member of the Heart of the Valley Astronomy Club) will conduct the workshop. Learn about eclipses, make a solar filter. and receive instruction on how to photograph the annular eclipse. Saturdays from 9-11 a.m., limited to 24 people. Bring a camera, ideally one with manual controls, and a tripod if you have one. All other materials will be provided. No prior skill needed. Music à la Carte: OSU alumna and professional violinist Rebecca Sabine is a concert violinist, composer, recording artist and certified mindfulness meditation teacher. In 2022 she received the Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Liberal Arts. Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet June 1-2 to consider approving a budget and advancing to the construction phase a research complex in Corvallis and a housing project in Newport to serve the university’s Hatfield Marine Science Center The board will meet from 9:15 a.m.-4 p.m. June 2 in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus. OSU Foundation announces Women’s Giving Circle grant awardees: Thirteen grants were awarded for 2023-24 by the OSU Women’s Giving Circle, ranging from $2,112 to expand English conversation partnership programs for international students to $9,960 to redefine digital literacy and career readiness competency for students at OSU-Cascades.
