In “What Came Next? Reflections on the Aftermath(s) of the 1918-19 Flu Pandemic in the Age of COVID,” published in The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Christopher McKnight Nichols and his co-authors compared COVID-19 policies and attitudes to the 1918 flu pandemic.
"There are things that people can do at the individual, community and landscape level," said Emily Jane Davis, associate professor at Oregon State University and interim fire program director. "We're doing a lot of emphasis on defensible space. So, what can you do to prepare the area immediately around your home so that it doesn't have flammable material?"
“He definitely has a pot of votes in that county that they’re hoping turns the tide,” said Judy Stiegler, a former state representative who teaches political science at the Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend. “The 5th takes up two-thirds of the county.”
Oregon Sea Grant, a marine research, public engagement and education program at Oregon State University, has awarded $1.15 million to five OSU scientists. The researchers will use the funds to study sea urchin farming techniques; electromagnetic fields’ impact on marine life; effect of low oxygen conditions on crabs; prevention of beach erosion; and mud blister worm infestation of oysters.
Oregon State University hosts its first “State of Black Affairs Summit” next week. "We have been very forthright about the fact that our agenda is all things black," organizer Bridget Jones tells KBND News. She is the Secretary for the OSU President's Commission on the Status of Black Faculty and Staff Affairs.

Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet at 2 p.m. Friday, May 20 to consider candidates to be interviewed as finalists to serve as OSU’s next president. Candidates selected will be invited to participate in open forums with the university community on May 23 and May 24. The meeting will begin with an executive session held remotely; trustees will discuss initial due diligence findings regarding candidates being considered to be invited to visit OSU. Following the executive session, the board will meet remotely in public session at 2:45 p.m. to announce the names of finalist candidates and the schedule of candidate forums, and vote on whether to reimburse candidate travel expenses. The executive sessions are being held in keeping with Oregon law – ORS 192.660(2)(a) that allows a public body to meet in executive session to consider the employment of a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent.
Baccalaureate Core Reform: The Faculty Senate has been engaged in a multi-year process to review and reform our 30-year-old Baccalaureate Core curriculum. There will be a Special Faculty Senate Session on May 20 from 3-5 p.m. in Linc 100 or on Zoom for Senators and OSU community members to come and ask questions and engage in conversation. NEW! Apply for a grant to make student learning more affordable: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant before the June 1 deadline. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. NEW! OMN student journalists receive statewide collegiate media awards: Coverage of the departure of former Oregon State University president F. King Alexander has won Orange Media Network students first place for comprehensive coverage in a statewide collegiate newspaper competition. The Daily Barometer earned four first places, two seconds and two thirds in the four-year division of the 2022 Collegiate Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association and the Oregon Newspapers Foundation. Awards were announced Wednesday. ONPA's statewide contest is open to student media in both two-year and four-year categories.

Seeking Volunteers for a Research Study: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering is seeking participants for a research study who are at least 18 years old and with a commercial vehicle license. Individuals with contact lenses or prescription lenses (-5.0 to +3.0) can participate in this study. The purpose of this study is to improve policy/design standards to make freight deliveries in urban environments more efficient and less stressful for truck drivers. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which includes a time commitment of approximately 1 hour and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. How Has the Pandemic Impacted Your Cat? We are looking for cats and their owners to help us understand how cat behavior and human-animal bonds were impacted by the pandemic. This OSU Human-Animal Interaction Lab research study will take place on the OSU Corvallis campus (Withycombe Hall) and will include two behavioral attachment tests with your cat (taking approximately 20-30 minutes). Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Hot Weather. One of the best ways to prevent heat illness is to be prepared for very hot weather. There are several things you can do to get yourself, family, home and community ready to stay cool. Know the signs of heat illness and who is most at risk. Think of family members, friends and neighbors who might be likely to have problems in the heat, and plan to check on them regularly when it is hot out. Research study: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks participants for a research study who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. The purpose of this study is to make intersections safer for bicyclists and reduce the potential for vehicle-bicycle collisions. Community climate survey: Oregon State faculty and staff are invited to participate in this year’s community climate survey from May 10 through June 3. OSU faculty and staff will receive an invitation to participate in the survey via email. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. The information participants enter for the incentive will not be linked to responses to the survey to ensure responses remain anonymous.
Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available around the Corvallis campus. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits at the following locations: Residence Hall Service Centers (Arnold, McNary and West); Lab tent outside Plageman Hall; Memorial Union Info Desk and Student Experience Center Info Desk. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing for people without symptoms. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Lab tent outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Cascade Hall 120, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Note: All employees will need a WVT Labdash account prior to testing.
NEW! Campus Way: For work related to the 2022 Street Safety Maintenance Project, the southeast sidewalk ramp along SW Campus Way, located northeast of Milne Computer Center, will be temporarily closed from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. There may also be delays to short-term service vehicle access during the closure (view map).
Magruder Hall: For work related to the 2022 Street Safety Maintenance Project, four parking spaces in the Magruder Hall Diagnostic Laboratory parking area will be closed starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, through 3 p.m. on Friday, May 20. A sidewalk detour will also be in place for pedestrians and the diagnostic lab will remain open (view map).
Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.
26th Street: As part of the 2022 Street Safety Maintenance Project, the southbound lane of SW 26th Street between SW Campus Way and SW Jefferson Way will be closed for road improvements from May 11-23. Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13.
