Dogs can be 'early warning systems' for toxic chemical exposure at home (National Geographic)

The silicone is so effective because it passively absorbs chemicals in a similar manner to human cells, giving scientists an idea not only of the chemicals a person contacts while they wear the bracelet, but also how much. Previously, scientists could only measure chemicals found in blood and urine, says Kim Anderson, an environmental toxicologist at Oregon State University, who developed the wristband technology.

OSU exploring climate change refuges that could act as 'lifeboats' for vulnerable species (Oregonian)

“In the Pacific Northwest, the iconic northern spotted owl relies on refugia in the form of old-growth forests,” Meg Krawchuk, a fire and forest ecologist at Oregon State University and a co-author of the study, said in a statement. “These forests are refugia from previous stand-replacing disturbances — that’s how they got to be old — but they’re slowly being nibbled away by recent high-severity fires.”
 

OSU Bend neighborhood sampling suggests 1 in 1,000 infected with COVID-19 (KTVZ)

Results from two days of door-to-door sampling in several Bend neighborhoods by Oregon State University and OSU-Cascades suggest that one person in 1,000 in the Bend community during the weekend of May 30-31 had the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, researchers announced Wednesday. UAOSU Contract Information Sessions: UAOSU is hosting information sessions where members of the bargaining team and organizing committee will present on the new Tentative Contract (salary, promotion & tenure, research support, and more) and the proposed constitution and bylaws. Sessions will be held June 11, 7-8:30 p.m. Contract ratification voting is live and will continue through June 12. This is a great opportunity to learn about what is being voted on. These can be useful for a wide range of people managing budgets and reporting on financial activities such as managers, department heads, and accountants. This presentation will provide an overview of financial reports in CORE that can serve as an introduction to someone new to financial reporting in CORE, or as a refresher for people experienced using CORE financial reports. She will be replacing Larry Landis, who is retiring after 30 years in archives at OSU and whose last day of work is June 30.

Larry Landis, Director of the Special Collections and Archives Research Center of OSU Libraries, is retiring: After 30 years in archives at OSU, Larry Landis is retiring, and his last day is June 30. Among his many accomplishments, Larry helped to establish the Oregon Multicultural Archives in 2005, authored A School for the People: A Photographic History of Oregon State University in 2015 (available from OSU Press), and worked on various OSU150 activities. Kobel retirement: Janine Kobel is retiring. She came to OSU in 1980 as a first-year student, began as a student employee in 1981, became classified staff in 1987, graduated from OSU in 1995, advanced to professional faculty in 2005, and retires June 30, 2020. Faculty & Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund Under IRS Code Section 139: In collaboration with the OSU Foundation, Oregon State University is offering emergency financial assistance grants through the OSU Faculty and Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help regular classified and unclassified employees in our university community with unexpected needs during this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic. All classified staff, professional faculty and academic/research faculty are eligible regardless of service time or FTE. An individual must be actively employed on the date of grant distribution. Read more about the details of the program here. Student hourly employees, graduate assistants, and stipend recipients (e.g., fellows) are not eligible.
