TRACE OSU testing: TRACE OSU is providing random COVID-19 testing by invitation at its Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. “Even while we’re preparing for Oregonians to be vaccinated, and many are being vaccinated already, it is still very essential to have a sense of the prevalence of the virus,” said OSU spokesman Steve Clark. (see also Bend Bulletin)
A drive up highway 126 from Springfield can be disheartening. After September’s Holiday Farm Fire, familiar landmarks are gone. Charred trees and hillsides in shades of brown and black dominate the view. But, according to Jim Rivers, a researcher in OSU’s College of Forestry, “Very shortly after that tree death occurs, the ecological community starts to rebound, and whether they’re plants or birds or bees, we see life in those areas.”
“If we’re going to follow the science, it makes sense to hold some of the vaccine back to ensure that other people have the second dose,” said Courtney Campbell, a professor of religion and culture at Oregon State University. He previously was at The Hastings Center, a think tank for medical ethics.
A new study from Oregon State University shows the family dog is taking cues from children in the home. The study adds to growing evidence that dogs can help children with social development, physical activity, managing anxiety and provide a source of stability during a change in family structure.

COVID-19 vaccination clinics for Phase 1a groups only: Mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be offered this week by Samaritan Health Services and the Benton County Health Department at Reser Stadium in collaboration with Oregon State University. Vaccinations will be available Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for limited individuals from Benton, Lincoln and Linn counties in the state of Oregon’s Phase 1a groups, as required by the Oregon Health Authority. Interested individuals must complete a short needs-assessment survey prior to scheduling vaccine appointments. The survey is available online in English at bit.ly/BentonCoGov-Vaccine1a and in Spanish at bit.ly/BentonCoGov-Vacunas1a. Vaccinations will take place on the stadium’s east concourse adjacent to gates A, B and C on Parker Plaza. Free parking will be available for vaccination clinic patients only in clearly marked areas of the Reser Stadium parking lot located at Southwest Western Boulevard and Southwest 26th Street across from the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus. During the vaccination clinic, this parking area will be closed to OSU commuter parking. OSU permit holders may park in any open lot within their permitted zone, including C zone spaces located to the west of Reser Stadium, which can be accessed from the entrance on Southwest 30th Street. 2021 Starker Lecture Series: "Resilience in the face of disturbance: Learning from disasters." In the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfires have impacted outdoor recreation systems both in the United States and around the world. These disturbances can influence how people recreate, where people recreate, and impact the behavior of visitors to parks and protected areas. Such changes in recreation use and related impacts to natural systems can lead to challenges for outdoor recreation management. This panel will take a local and global view of how these natural disturbances and disasters have affected recreation systems and how outdoor recreation managers are responding to these disruptions. Nanoplastics Video – Pacific Northwest Consortium and the Marine Studies Initiative: The Marine Studies Initiative and Pacific Northwest Consortium on Plastics teamed up with Oregon State Productions to create a video on nanoplastics and tire wear particles. Nanoplastics are particles smaller than macro and microplastics. While scientists have detected micro tire wear particles in the environment, further research is needed to improve our knowledge about the presence and behavior of nanoparticles and their impact on aquatic species. Board of Trustees: The OSU Board will meet Friday, Jan. 29, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The board will consider the university’s 10-year business forecast, amendments to investment policies, advancement of several capital projects and an adjustment for winter 2021 term incidental fees for students attending OSU-Cascades. The board also will hear briefings on the university’s implementation of SP4.0, the 2021 Oregon legislative session and the Elliott State Forest. Animal Interlude of Common Murre: Spring Creek Project's just-launched Animal Interludes series will consist of 20 tiny concerts (two per week), each an original composition of words and music in honor of a threatened or beloved animal. They are part of the series Music to Save Earth's Songs, inspired by Kathleen Dean Moore's new book Earth's Wild Music. In the first Interlude video, Robin Kimmerer reads a passage about the Common Murre, accompanied by Erika Nagamoto on violin and Titus Young on cello.
Tuition Forums: The University Budget Committee has begun meeting to discuss recommendations for tuition rates for the 2021-22 academic year. As part of developing recommendations for the Board of Trustees, representatives of the Budget Committee and the Office of Budget and Resource Planning are offering a series of weekly forums to discuss the tuition setting process, tuition rate scenarios for FY22, and to answer any questions about tuition and the university budget. National Hemp Symposium: Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources, a major program unit of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, will host the first-ever National Hemp Symposium on Feb. 9 and 10. The symposium will include presentations from leaders across world economic sectors on what the industry sees as the future and how hemp may fit into their visions. Undergraduate Assessment Workshop- Making Meaning Across Modalities: Student Learning Assessment for Programs with Multiple Locations and Delivery Methods. Honors College Names 2021 Eminent Professors: The Oregon State University Honors College is pleased to announce that Nancy Squires has been posthumously recognized as the 2021 Honors College Eminent Professor, and Christopher McKnight Nichols has been named the 2021 Sandy and Elva Sanders Honors College Eminent Professor. Squires was a senior instructor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering and Nichols is an associate professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts and the director of the OSU Center for the Humanities. Student Learning Experience Survey Pilot: Join the Faculty Senate in testing out alternatives to the existing electronic Student Evaluation of Teaching (eSET) survey.
