An interdisciplinary team at Oregon State University received a nearly $5 million grant to create a new research center to transform what scientists know about environmental health risks for children into public health interventions and policy.
“This is the biggest predation event on this planet: the biggest apex predator taking down the biggest prey,” says study co-author Robert Pitman, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute. “We don’t have dinosaurs anymore, so for me as a whale biologist and a zoologist it’s an amazing thing.”
On this edition of Oregon Rainmakers, we talk with Karl Mundorff, the executive director of the Oregon State University Accelerator program. The Accelerator program takes entrepreneurial business ideas from students’ faculty and the broader community and speeds them to market. Mundorff leads this innovative program and talks about the ways they are helping create the next generation of businesses here in Oregon.
“It is a male-dominated industry, and it has been for a long time,” Oregon State University Professor Carol Lorenzen told The Food Institute. “Women want to be successful, but there are barriers.”

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work.
