Oregon Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) announced on Wednesday more than $1 million in grant funding on its way to Oregon State University through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, state officials said.
Mass timber continues to garner nationwide support, and use, when it comes to large scale construction. Federal and local support has increased over the last few years, as grants have been given to the Tallwood Institute, a collaborative effort between the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, in order to study and advocate for the technology going forward.
Two major points are suggested by the data, obtained from tree rings: 1) Native people used fire frequently to manage the land, and 2) large, wind-driven fires like those in 2020 were rare. James Johnston, a researcher in the Oregon State University College of Forestry, is the lead author on the recently-published study. He joins us to unpack the facts and what they seem to indicate.
Oregon State University has a world renowned hazelnut breeding program, and the newest variety, Thompson, has recently been released. Thompson has some impressing features pacific northwest growers will be interested in.

DFA Risk Appetite and Risk Assessment Tools: "Train the Trainer." Vistas and Vineyards Juried Show: Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center presents Vistas and Vineyards Juried Show. Vistas and Vineyards is the oldest continuous plein air painting group in the state of Oregon. Come celebrate their 34 years of painting outdoors. The exhibition runs from Jan. 3-Feb. 29. The Little Gallery Presents: Afghanistan Before the Wars - Photography by Mark Svendsen. The narrative for this exhibit is to acquaint Oregonians with the native beauty of Afghanistan and the universal humanity of its people, and to impart a sense of what life there was like when the country was at peace half a century ago. The exhibit will run Jan. 9 - Feb. 16 in The Little Gallery of Kidder Hall. Free and open to all.
President’s Winter Celebration: The stars will align to bring together President Jayathi Murthy, the OSU Board of Trustees and the entire university community to celebrate the start of winter term. Onboarding forums held via Zoom: The President and Provost’s Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PPLC) is hosting another onboarding forum via Zoom for employees of color on Jan. 12. We are seeking to identify additional ways to support the success and belonging of new employees of color. The forum is from 9-10 a.m. on Jan. 12 and registration is required. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State managers, supervisors and lead workers. Internationalization Grant: The Office of Global Engagement has announced the Internationalization Grant application cycle for 2023-24, opening Dec. 1 and closing Jan. 31. This year, the grant is offered in three tracks, aligned with Oregon State University’s new strategic plan “Prosperity Widely Shared,” focusing on research and innovation, global and intercultural learning and career and workforce development. FourSight Mindset Reveal Workshop: How do you approach a challenge? FourSight Mindset Reveal is a new workshop presented by the Office of University Human Resources that dives deep into the way that we solve problems together. This engaging workshop helps people learn more about their own mindset, learn appreciation for how colleagues work, and together be able create a stronger team environment and reach more creative solutions. BennyBuy: Purchases through the BennyBuy punch-out catalogs for Hewlett Packard (HP) and Bluum (Troxell) are now limited to $25,000 and below. GIS Campus Construction Map Launch: A new OSU Corvallis Campus Construction Map launched in early December 2023, thanks to a successful joint effort between DFA IT, University Land Use Planning and Space Management. The new construction map leverages GIS technology to illustrate the scope of construction work happening across campus and displays current, future and recently completed projects. The map also provides a short description of each project and links to further information.
