OSU study finds high levels of depression and anxiety among disabled people during COVID (KPTV)

The main reason for the heightened levels is social isolation, according to Kathleen Bogart, co-author of the study and an Associate Professor of Psychology at OSU. (see also KEZI)

VR to the ER: Metaverse early adopters prove accident-prone

Jay Kim, an associate professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at Oregon State University who has studied VR injuries, said users should take frequent breaks to avoid harmful outcomes such as “gorilla arm syndrome,” a pain caused by keeping one’s arms raised for prolonged periods.  
 

Ocean heat waves trigger 'squid bloom' along Pacific Coast, scientists say (Seattle Times)

The study, which was led by researchers from NOAA, Oregon State University and the University of California at Santa Cruz, used data collected between 1998 and 2019 by the National Marine Fisheries Service and created a model to estimate changes in the population density and distribution of market squid along the Pacific Coast.

Art Exhibition: "Celebrate Oregon's Diversity" takes the opportunity to celebrate Oregon's diversity through its culture and landscape. Art exhibition runs in the Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center through March 18. Reception is Thursday, Feb. 3, 5-7 p.m. in the Giustina Gallery lobby. Music à la Carte: Jade Hails, percussion. OSU Music alumnus Jade Hails returns to campus to perform on the Music à la Carte Concert Series. Hails' program will feature transcriptions of hallmark composers juxtaposed against the seemingly avant-garde works of theatrical percussion. Feb. 4 at noon, Memorial Union Lounge. University Budget Committee: The Committee will meet this Friday, Feb. 4 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The committee will discuss projections and planning relevant to developing budget and tuition recommendations for 2022-23. If you are interested in joining as an observer, register for the webinar here.

FYI Friday – Consumer Taste Tests: This talk will cover the reasons food companies use the Center for Sensory & Consumer Behavior Research to answer their questions; the different types of testing, sample preparation and test design to minimize bias; and how the local community is intricately involved. Rescheduled Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Keynote Address: Registration  is now open for the keynote address to be held on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center and via livestream. The keynote speaker is LaTosha Brown, nationally recognized as the “go-to” expert in black voting rights and voter suppression, black women’s empowerment and philanthropy. Health & Safety: The University Health & Safety Committee wants to promote health and safety by providing 12 months of safety tips from SAIF, which supervisors and department safety coordinators can use to promote safety throughout the year. $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in April 2022. Proposals are due by Feb. 28, 5 p.m. Learn more and apply.

Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars Undergrad Internships for 2022: The Summer Scholars Program is a paid, 10-week internship that places diverse undergraduate students from around the country with various Oregon-based host organizations (tribal, public agency, non-profit, non-governmental). Traffic and Maintenance

Reser: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, the South Reser parking lot entrance/exit to SW 26th Street will be temporarily moved to the south to allow for construction of the new wellness center (view map). Both entrance and exit will be limited to one lane with a detour in place once in the parking lot. The existing crosswalk will be closed and a new temporary crosswalk will be added across SW 26th Street.

Furman Hall: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a planned water shutdown at Joyce Collin Furman Hall is scheduled for Feb. 3 from 6 a.m.-3 p.m. (view map). Restrooms will not be usable during the planned water shutdown. For questions or comments about the planned water shutdown, contact Construction Manager Ryan Wilson at 503-779-3488.

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
