OSU Newport facility built vertically for earthquake, tsunami (KOIN)

After a tsunami advisory on the Oregon coast last month, KOIN 6 News checked in with Oregon State University about its vertical evacuation structure in Newport. First reported in the New York Times, there have only been two vertical evacuation structures built in the Pacific Northwest, one being OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. The center is built to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and has a rooftop to support up to 900 people.

 

OSU-Cascades event to celebrate Black excellence and success in Oregon (KTVZ)

In recognition of Black History Month, Oregon State University–Cascades will host a virtual event on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 24 exploring the personal and professional journeys of four current Black leaders in Oregon.
 

Vaccine hesitancy has seeped into home health care (The Atlantic) 

Shelter-in-place orders created a situation in which disability was simulated at large, Kathleen Bogart, an associate psychology professor at Oregon State University and the director of the school’s Disability and Social Interaction Lab, told me. Millions discovered what it meant to spend the majority of their time at home, require flexible work options, contract outside help with daily tasks, and receive virtual health care.

Oregon Senate passes bill allowing college athletes to profit from jersey sales, trading cards and video games (OPB News)

Senate Bill 1505 would allow athletes such as 6-foot-7-inch University of Oregon forward Sedona Prince and Oregon State University cornerback Jaydon Grant to earn royalties from jersey sales, trading cards and video games that profit off them. Prince and Grant are among a number of student-athletes with name, image or likeness deals hanging in the balance, as legislators debate SB 1505.
 

Northwestern Vancouver Island likely escaped the Ice Age (Hakai Magazine)

“The work that the Hakai group is doing is very progressive,” says Loren Davis, an archaeologist at Oregon State University who was not involved in the study. “It’s exactly the kind of stuff that we need in order to understand what the world was like early on along the Pacific Coast and what the potential parameters could be for understanding what the lives of people might’ve been like.”

OSU released a number of announcements this week. “The university is going to maintain, until further notice, our requirements for face coverings in indoor public settings,” said Steve Clark, vice president for university relations and marketing at OSU. (see also KTVZ)

University Theatre: Ellis Island, a new play by OSU Theatre student Leah Kahn will run in the Withycombe Hall Lab Theatre, Feb. 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. In appreciation of being back in front of a live audience, tickets for all University Theatre productions are complimentary this term and can be reserved. Principles of Vineyard Management Course: Patty Skinkis, professor and Viticulture Extension Specialist in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University is offering a course to the industry and public who wish to learn about wine grape growing. NEW! TRIAD 2022-23 Service Scholarship: The TRIAD Service Scholarship recognizes service as a value worthy of encouragement. This year the award is for $500. Consideration will be given to undergraduates who are juniors or seniors during the 2022-23 academic year. Students may be enrolled in Corvallis, Cascades or Ecampus. Applications will be evaluated based on undergraduate academic record (cumulative GPA, progress toward degree) and the significance of service activities. Deadline April 1. Apply for an Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant through March 29. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. The 34th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. Keith Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Submission details can be found here. Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Provost will announce the winner in May 2022.
