Slated to open early next year, Oregon State University’s new $75 million Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts, also known as PRAx, represents the university’s commitment to integrating the arts and humanities into to its already prestigious reputation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“Barley varieties that dominate the market today were not bred for positive contribution to beer flavor,” says Patrick Hayes, who heads a research team at Oregon State University. “They were bred to meet farmer expectations, like yield and disease resistance, and maltster needs, like protein levels, enzyme package and dormancy.”
Faculty and students face a challenging situation when they come across unfamiliar learning space designs. This situation also affects the staff members supporting these innovative environments. Oregon State University (OSU) and the University of California, Riverside (UCR) faced such circumstances when they introduced their learning-in-the-round spaces in 2015 and 2021, respectively. The lesson learned at both institutions is that the key to facilitating successful experiences in unprecedented learning spaces involves interactions among instructors, a careful assessment of outcomes, collaboration among like-minded colleagues, and close attention to critical voices.

Emeritus Farewell: Everyone is invited to the farewell ceremony for Emeritus, the 80-foot tall sculpture by John Grade, which will be moving to Alaska after 14 months at OSU. OSU Theatre presents A Christmas Carol: A 1940s Radio Show by Thomas Nabhan. OSU Theatre will present, "A Christmas Carol: A 1940s Radio Show," a new twist on a beloved holiday classic by Thomas Nabhan. Bobbin' Through the Woods Art and Craft Fair. The holiday craft and art fair is returning to the Peavy Forest Science Center. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Dec. 8 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 9. This year we have even more vendors, but the mission remains the same. All proceeds support Rootstock, our College of Forestry food pantry, and our food insecure students.
Holiday Tree Auction: Firs for Food Insecurity. Dec. 8-9, Peavy Forest Science Center. We have 11 decorated trees donated by different units around campus that are up for silent auction during the fair. As you move throughout the building, please stop by to have a look at the trees, place your bid and collect passport stamps to be entered to win a prize valued at over $200. First Meal: The Corvallis Museum is hosting a talk to mark the publication of "First Meal" (OSU Press) by Julie Green and Kirk Johnson, a beautiful book about the power of food and freedom that tells the stories of 25 wrongfully convicted people through art and reporting. OSU Professor of Art Julie Green — best known for her "Last Supper" series — died in 2021 as work on the book was nearing completion. MFA Reading Series: The MFA Reading Series celebrates new nonfiction, fiction and poetry from students in OSU's MFA program in creative writing. Each month, a writer from each genre reads an excerpt of their work. This month’s reading will occur at 5 p.m., Dec. 8 at the Corvallis Public Library and will feature Selene Ross (fiction), Katie Cusumano (nonfiction) and Nicolette Ratz (poetry). Winter Storytelling: Indigenous Stories of Place. Join members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde for an evening of storytelling in many forms including family stories, Ikanum (creation stories), contemporary stories, and readings. Some will be told in the Indigenous language then translated into English. FYI Friday – How to Submit a Course Proposal in CIM: OSU uses Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM) software as an online platform for curricular proposal submission and review. This course demonstrates how to navigate CIM to successfully submit a course proposal as well as explains the curriculum review workflow in a nutshell. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women is offering scholarships to cover early registration fees for the 2024 GAIN conference being held in Seaside, Oregon from April 22-24. Hawai'i donation drive: The devastating fires in Lahaina in August resulted in the loss of life and property. OSU students, staff and community members who are from Maui and Hawai’i have been directly and indirectly impacted significantly. OSU Kokua Maui–Hui O Hawai’i is taking the lead along with other OSU entities to organize the collection and drop-offs, which take place from 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Dec. 4-8, at the Beth Ray Center. Donations requested include diapers, feminine care products, new children’s toys and gift cards.
Internationalization Grant: The Office of Global Engagement is pleased to announce the Internationalization Grant application cycle for 2023-24, opening Dec. 1 and closing Jan. 31. This year, the grant is offered in three tracks, aligned with Oregon State University’s new strategic plan “Prosperity Widely Shared,” focusing on research and innovation, global and intercultural learning and career and workforce development. OSU Loyal Philanthropic Partner award: OSU President Emeritus Ed Ray has been chosen for the OSU Foundation’s 2023 OSU Loyal Philanthropic Partner Award, which honors faculty and staff who promote a culture of philanthropy at the university. “Throughout Ed’s 17-year tenure as president – and his ongoing involvement as a faculty member – he has been an extraordinary philanthropic leader,” said Larry Landis, a member of the OSU Loyal Advisory Committee that selected the award winner in this third annual tradition.

Kerr parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr south parking lot closure has been extended until Jan. 8 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
Stadium Avenue: As part of the Bloss Hall Renovation project, a section SW Stadium Avenue, located between CH2M Hill Alumni Center and Bloss Hall, will be closed from Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Friday, Jan. 5. Multiple parking spaces in the Bloss Hall West parking lot (bordering Stadium Ave.) will also be closed. In addition, the sidewalk on the west side of Bloss Hall will be closed.
