Preschool for All program is aimed at addressing a lack of childcare openings — a statewide problem that preceded COVID-19, according to research by Oregon State University. Researchers and state officials say the shortages got worse during the pandemic.
The study, a collaboration between Oregon State University, Portland State University, the University of Oregon, Oregon Health and Science University, the California Institute for Rural Studies and dozens of community care organizations, follows up on a survey conducted between August and September of 2020, and goes into greater depth on the personal experiences farmworkers face. The study documents lack of workforce COVID protections, food insecurity, wage loss, the child care crisis and lack of access to information for medical, social and economic support.
A new paper recently published in the journal Fungal Biology summarizes centuries of psilocybin use among shamans and guides who treated people for a host of ailments, from anxiety and rheumatism to toothaches and stomach pain. The paper, by nine researchers including senior author Jessie Uehling, assistant professor of fungal biology at Oregon State University, fills a knowledge gap for the state Psilocybin Advisory Council.
"There is agricultural development, livestock grazing, non-native grasses grow in the area where they like to breed, bullfrogs eating them, it's not just climate change. They are getting hit by a lot of things," said Andrew Blaustein, biology professor emeritus at Oregon State University. "But when the climate changes, the entire ecosystem is screwed up."
“There’s a process by which those names are chosen,” said study co-author and Oregon State University associate professor Natchee Barnd. “And if we’re operating within a system that has been grounded in white supremacy, it’s probably going to reflect that — some really explicitly and vehemently, and some by default or accidentally, such as the fact that a name is in English.” (see also KEZI)
In Oregon, Larry O’Neill, state climatologist and professor at Oregon State University, said the statewide average snow-water equivalent April 11 was at 69% of normal, compared to 57% of normal last week.
Following an extensive national search, Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences has named Dr. Surendra Dara as the director of the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC).
Fulbright opportunity: Raymond Malewitz, assistant professor of English, is currently on a Fulbright at the University of Warsaw's American Studies Center, where he serves as a Distinguished Chair of American Studies. The ASC and the US Embassy invited him to President Biden's address in late March at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

A State of Immigrants: A New Look at the Immigrant Experience in Oregon. This live remote panel talk features authors of the recently released report of the same name. Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University's Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for simulated supervisor-based environments. Participants will complete a series of tasks that require controlling and monitoring a simulated remotely-piloted vehicle and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete one two-hour session. Participants who complete the entire evaluation will receive $30. How Has the Pandemic Impacted Your Cat? We are looking for cats and their owners to help us understand how cat behavior and human-animal bonds were impacted by the pandemic. This OSU Human-Animal Interaction Lab research study will take place on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus (Withycombe Hall) and will include two behavioral attachment tests with your cat (taking approximately 20-30 minutes).
