Researchers at Oregon State University have developed a process that uses polluted water to produce hydrogen while purifying the water at the same time. VOA’s Julie Taboh reports on advances in the fossil fuel alternative.

David Rothwell, a sociology professor at Oregon State University who researches poverty, said “the biggest cause of persistent poverty in both urban and rural communities is the economy, more specifically good-paying jobs for many people in the community.
At Oregon State University, President Jayathi Murthy has focused on growing the university’s Ecampus online learning. Ecampus welcomes learners from all 50 states and internationally and has contributed to the school being the only public university in the state to increase enrollment each year since 2020.
For some farms, agritourism activities only bring in a small percentage of income; but in a business with such low margins, it can be an important lifeline. “Some of these farms wouldn’t be economically viable without it,” said Audrey Comerford, agritourism coordinator for the Oregon State University extension service. But, she added, the reason that agritourism exists in the first place is because farmers are inventive, and many have turned to diversification to stay afloat when one crop fails or bad weather during one harvest keeps visitors away.
Co-author Todd Pugatch, professor of economics at Oregon State University, says that more first-gen students majoring in economics means that more of these students will land the relatively high-paying, secure jobs associated with the degree.
In Southern Oregon, Douglas firs are experiencing a “decline spiral,” according to researchers at Oregon State University and the U.S. Forest Service. “In recent years, we’ve had drought, of course, but it’s been drought accompanied by higher temperatures, particularly in the summer. And that has really stressed trees to their limits,” said Max Bennett, a retired extension forester with OSU. “And then opportunistic insects come along and take advantage of these stressed trees and kill them.”
The toxins are hard to track as a mix of many organisms make them. Now, researchers at Oregon State University have developed a new way to monitor the danger associated with algae blooms that occur at the surface of the water. The researchers “sniff” the water for gasses associated with the toxins with a special machine called a mass spectrometer that detects all of the gaseous molecules simultaneously. OSU Associate Professor Kimberly Halsey leads the study that was published in mSystems.
At Oregon State University, administrators recently established the Higher Education AI Task Force (HEAT) to provide more oversight and guidance on the use of AI in higher education as it applies to research and teaching, according to Regan Gurung, an associate vice provost and executive director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and professor of psychological science who chairs the new task force.

Forest thinning improves the health of older trees and enhances native biodiversity on federal lands in Eastern Oregon. A new pharmacy has opened its doors on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis after the shuttering of several local pharmacies in the mid-Willamette valley.
A project that physically began with a January 2022 implosion, the new west side features premium seats, unparalleled views, a full stadium concourse without barricades, “Beaver Street,” significant upgrades to concessions and dining experiences, and LED lights that allow for instant on/off, flashing, movements and colors.
A recently published study by Luke Painter of Oregon State University said Yellowstone’s bison in places like the Lamar Valley are affecting the regeneration of aspen. Bison bulls will trample small aspen or rake their horns on the trees, stunting their growth or killing them.
The 49-acre site is anticipated to serve as the operations hub for the research forest, which will be overseen by the Elliott State Research Forest Authority and managed in partnership with Oregon State University. The proposed headquarters site will include laboratory, classroom, dormitory and office spaces and may also house potential partnerships with local and Tribal entities.
Community members are invited to an open house next Thursday, Sept. 14, to learn about the second phase of development of Oregon State University-Cascades’ long-range development plan, including the planned innovation district.
"The concept of no-till has been around for a couple of decades, but research has been very focused on field crops like wheat and corn, things largely grown in the Midwest," said Erica Chernoh, Oregon State University Extension Service horticulturist. "There's not much on vegetable production or fruit. There's a lot to learn, and research is ongoing."

Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Preparedness Kits. Preparedness kits help bridge the emergency or disaster until normalcy can be restored. Kit recommendations range from 24 hours to 72 hours to 14 days, from personal to vehicle to workplace and household sizes. The difference between the kits is the quantity of items (more for longer periods of time), size of storage container and types of items (immediate survival versus long-term living). Research Advancement Academy: Applications for the 2023-24 Research Advancement Academy and seed funds program are due Sept. 22. The Research Advancement Academy prepares early- and mid-career faculty to successfully lead large, transdisciplinary proposals and funded research programs. $15K of funding available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone connected to commercialization. Each quarter, Vice President Mike Green and DFA senior leaders share project milestones, unit news, highlights, updates and coming events. While targeted to division employees, the VPFA quarterly updates are a great way for anyone to get an overview of the broad and varied work of DFA units.
Anytime Anywhere Mental Health Support App Rebranding: The Anytime Anywhere mental health support app for students has a new name and logo. The MySSP app is now TELUS Health Student Support. No action is required to continue using the app. Students will see some visual changes on the app, but the mental health and well-being support services offered will stay exactly the same. Marketing materials featuring the new app name and logo will roll out soon and departments are asked to update the posters displayed. ADA crosswalk ramp: As part of the Cordley Renovation Project, a new ADA crosswalk ramp will be installed at the northeast corner of N.W. 27th Street and N.W. Orchard Avenue. A pedestrian and ADA detour will be in place with appropriate signage.
Kerr south parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot will be closed for construction activities from June 26-Sept. 27. The path running along the west side of the Kerr Administration Building will be closed along with the south entrance/exit to the parking lot and the ADA ramp. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
