A team of Oregon State University researchers will be looking for new ways to measure and reduce the impact of carbon dioxide in the world’s oceans, a problem with far-reaching implications both in the water and on land.
Bee taxonomist Lincoln Best pulled a wooden box labeled “impressive bees” from the shelves that lined his lab at Oregon State University and carefully removed the cover. Inside, rows of shiny, green-blue bees filled the box’s inner compartments, each one pierced with a pin as if in a museum. They reflected the overhead fluorescent lights like jewels.
The Andrews was established in 1948 by the U.S. Forest Service and is administered cooperatively by the Forest Service Northwest Research Station, OSU and the Willamette National Forest.
New court actions upholding climate stability as a protected right are needed to break the climate change impasse, an Oregon State University economist concludes in a just-published paper.

Oregon State University researchers for years have been studying the potential health benefits of xanthohumol, a chemical found in hops, and its derivatives including tetrahydroxanthohumol. The latter is commonly abbreviated to TXN, the former to XN.
Agility used technology developed at Oregon State University to build a robot called Digit that walks on two legs, climbs stars and can carry and stack large objects. Agility divides its headquarters between its Corvallis labs and Pittsburgh, where CEO Damion Shelton lives. (see also OPB)
Most of the final exam in Andy Olstad’s quantitative foundations class in the Oregon State University College of Business is focused on cut and dried statistics. But every term, Olstad gives students a chance to describe in an open-ended essay their experiences in his rather challenging class, hoping they will pinpoint the virtues that have helped them persevere. Now, a computer can answer that question.

The warmer water that El Niño brings has more volume, likely causing higher tides and the potential for coastal flooding, according to Jack Barth, a physical oceanographer and executive director of the Marine Studies Initiative at Oregon State University. Barth and other scientists expect the sea level off the Oregon coast to rise this winter due to El Niño.
Study co-author Erica Fleishman is a professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University and also directs the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute.
Kevin Harvey, the Oregon State University Foundation’s associate vice president for finance with 28 years of experience in senior leadership for finance at public university foundations, has been named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the OSU Foundation, beginning Saturday, Sept. 16.

Marcia Walker, who earned her doctorate in food science and technology from OSU in 2003, will take over as center director beginning Sept. 25. She replaces Dave Stone, who stepped down last year to become the first associate dean of international programs for the College of Agricultural Sciences at OSU.
There are a half-dozen 4-H llama clubs in Clackamas County. Although not as abundant as cattle, sheep, swine and goats, llamas are a livestock animal shown by 4-H youths at county fairs in Oregon and across the United States.
A new Oregon State University program aims to bring together companies with AI projects with advanced-degree students in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
A research team led by James Johnston of the Oregon State University College of Forestry has been studying the effects of thinning, in 2014 and 2015, on a 7,200-acre section of the Malheur National Forest. This is a ponderosa pine forest. The researchers, from OSU and the Forest Service, found plentiful evidence that the thinning benefited not only those trees, but the wider forest ecosystem.
Higher education must innovate to keep up with the evolving economy, students’ financial constraints and the need for greater public trust in the sciences, National Academy of Sciences president Marcia McNutt said Tuesday in a speech at Oregon State University.
“We've seen almost a doubling of the number of schools that have used this basically over the past decade, and even since just 2020 we've seen almost a 40-50% increase in the number of schools using this,” said Paul Thompson, an economist at Oregon State University who studies the impacts of four-day school weeks.

NEW! Science Pub Lebanon: Randall Milstein, a senior instructor in the physics department at Oregon State, will discuss the annular solar eclipse, or ring of fire eclipse, Oct. 11 in Lebanon. On Oct. 14, portions of western North America will experience an annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon, at its farthest distance from Earth, passes between the sun and Earth, and partially blocks the sun resulting in a "ring of fire" eclipse. 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Tallman Brewing. OSU Extension’s Tree School Field Day offers an opportunity for learning in the woods: Clackamas County’s largest outdoor learning day for woodland caretakers returns to the Hopkins Demonstration Forest on Oct. 7. Tree School Field Day allows students to spend a day in the woods, visiting a variety of learning stations with local experts in forest stewardship and natural resources. Students will have five class periods of forestry-related topics to choose from. The cost is $30 per adult or $20 per youth which includes a boxed lunch and snacks during the day. Research Advancement Academy: Applications for the 2023/24 Research Advancement Academy and seed funds program are due on Sept 22. The Research Advancement Academy prepares early- and mid-career faculty to successfully lead large transdisciplinary proposals and funded research programs. It includes a set of workshops over fall and winter terms, and the opportunity to apply for up to 50K in seed fund support in spring (see schedule here). Registration to present at the Fall Virtual Showcase (FVS): Open now through Oct. 11. FVS is a virtual, asynchronous opportunity for OSU undergraduates to share their research and creative projects with the OSU community Oct. 23-25. Undergraduates from all academic disciplines, in all years of study and at all stages of work are invited to present. We will have an in-person kickoff event in the MU from 5-6 p.m. on Oct. 23. Traffic change on SW 26th St. to improve safety: Southwest 26th St. stretching from SW Jefferson Way north to NW Orchard Avenue has been changed from two-way vehicle traffic to one-way, northbound traffic only. The street has been updated with new signage, designated north and south bicycle lanes and other street markings designed to clarify and enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist priority zone. This change supports a more safe and comfortable campus that prioritizes pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and minimizes conflicts between vehicles and people, especially during class change times and implements a key recommendation in OSU’s Transportation Plan and the city’s Transportation System Plan.
ADA crosswalk ramp: As part of the Cordley Renovation Project, a new ADA crosswalk ramp will be installed at the northeast corner of NW 27th Street and NW Orchard Avenue. A pedestrian and ADA detour will be in place with appropriate signage.
