Exports of agriculture from Oregon farms increased 25 percent during the past six years, according to an Oregon State University economic analysis report.

 

"Medical mistrust" plays a large part in Hispanic parents' vaccine hesitancy (Moms)

According to US News, a new study is showing that vaccine hesitancy in the Hispanic community is largely due to the medical mistrust that this community has for doctors and medical professionals. This conclusion was based on a small study that was done by Oregon State University, and it can be read in full here.

Tanis Leach, president of the Oregon State University student chapter of the American Meteorological Society, believes Portland will get between 4 and 12 inches of snow this winter.


Video: Unique prowl of social jaguars shuns meat for fish (WCTI12)

Jaguars are typically solitary, except for mothers with cubs, and they eat mainly deer and other mammals. Yet Oregon State University researchers and a team of international scientists appear to have found the opposite behavior in a group of jaguars (Panthera onca) in the wetlands of Brazil’s Northern Pantanal, northwest of São Paulo.

 

Indigenous resistance in the OSU classroom: Native studies, feminisms, pop culture (Corvallis Advocate)

During the 2020-2021 academic year, Dr. Luhui Whitebear (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation), assistant professor at Oregon State University and Center Director of Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws, committed to finding creative ways to decolonize the university classroom in a series of three courses: Introduction to Native American Studies, Indigenous Feminisms, and Indigenous Resistance and Pop Culture. The latter two, she hopes to make permanent at OSU.

Brewing triple IPAs and beyond: Battling against nature (Craft Beer & Brewing)

Dry hops require a heavy hand to drive their point home. However, as we’ve learned from research conducted by Thomas Shellhammer’s group at Oregon State University, the heaviest hand doesn’t win the game. You see diminishing returns after crossing the threshold of an ounce per gallon (8 grams per liter).

Information Security Symposium: The Office of Information Security and ASOSU Office of Advocacy are collaborating for a Zoom symposium on Oct. 25 from 4-5 p.m. In celebration of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this will give students and faculty a look into the private and public sector of cybersecurity, as well as tools on how to protect themselves from scams and phishing. 

Decolonizing Western Pasts: How Public History and Writing Can Inform Each Other. Environmental historian Daniel Grant writes and teaches about multiracial migrations in the North American West. Grant will discuss combining archival research with public history, and will share lessons from his work with Indigenous, African American and Anglo communities in Yuma, Arizona. Free. Blue Heart: Beauty and Change Along America’s Western Shoreline. The traditional Japanese folk art of Gyotaku, or fish rubbing, has been used by the renowned artists Dwight Hwang and Duncan Berry to create the 25 major pieces of art featured in this exhibit. NEW! Call for Faculty Fellow: The Center for Teaching and Learning has issued a 2022 Blended Learning Faculty Fellow Call for Applications. Housing fire safety: Students who live away from home should recognize fire safety features present in their living space. Here are some tips to stay safe: Look for a fully sprinklered building when choosing a place to live. Make sure your sleeping area is protected with a smoke alarm inside the room. Test the smoke detector(s) monthly. Learn your building’s evacuation plan and practice the drill for muscle memory. Stay in the kitchen when cooking and only cook when you're alert.
